Charles sauntered into the Three Broomsticks. He tended to rotate his drinking locations, just for variety, and tonight, he chose the Three Broomsticks. He felt tired, deep down in his bones. He couldn't keep doing this every night, but he didn't know what else to do. Sure, he supposed he could concentrate on looking for the Dark Lord's coveted necklace. Or finding new recruits. Or flirting with pretty young things. But he found he didn't care about the Dark Lord's desire for fancy jewelry, or gathering new minions for him. And every time he tried flirting with a girl these days, she turned out to be a vampire. He ordered a drink from the barmaid, then took a large gulp from the glass.
"Another day, another hangover in the making," he mumbled to himself.

Cassidy cautiously picked her way through the Three Broomsticks. She was checking out all the local pubs, in hope of finding Charles Mortensen, the reputed Death Eater who was supposedly involved in the attack on the Order. She really hoped she'd find him here, and not at the Hog's Head. Vincent may have worked there, but she found the place to be a bit too rough for her taste. As she approached the counter, she spotted a tall man with slicked-back white-blonde hair. She took a deep breath and reminded herself that she was doing this for Tyler. Then she walked over to him and tapped him on the shoulder. Almost immediately after she did, however, she started to lose her nerve. She took a few steps back and was about to turn and run away.

Charles turned and saw the girl edging away from him. She was a pretty little thing, all doe-eyed and innocent. But completely not his type. Still, he gave her a cocky grin. "Can I help you, love?" he said.

Cassidy gulped. Her heart was beating so loud, she was sure the whole room could hear it. "Um... I..." she stammered. She took a deep breath and thought again of Tyler. "I'm... looking for a Charles Mortensen?" she said at last.

"Oh, are you, then?" he said, grinning at her. "Well, you're in luck, then. I just so happen to be one. What can I do to you... I mean, for, you?"

"I... um... well, I just need to ask you a few... questions... about the attack on the Order of the Phoenix. Um, some reports... indicate that you were involved..." Cassidy trailed off and stared at the floor. This wasn't going well.

Charles raised his eyebrows at her. "Oh, do they now? And just who made these reports, anyway? Are you here to arrest me? Tiny little thing like you all by your lonesome?"

"Oh... um... well, it's not that I shouldn't arrest you, but no... that's not why I'm here. I'm an auror, but I'm investigating the case of Tyler Jackson," Cassidy burst out. "I believe he was under the Imperius Curse when he joined in the attack, and I beileve that you know something about it. I, um, was just hoping maybe you could answer a few questions..."

"Oh, is that what he told you, then?" Charles said, grinning at her. "The Imperius Curse? Well, I don't know anything about that. If he was under the curse, no one told me. He and I had a duel, and I know he claimed to be working for the Order then, but then he met up with Claudia. You've heard of her, right? She's very beautiful. And she's got ways of... persuading a man to do what she wants. I think it's more likely that after a roll or two with her, he was more than willing to switch sides!"

Cassidy at first thought he was referring to Claudia's reputed knack for torturing, and indeed, Tyler had told her that Claudia had tortured him. But when he got to the last part of him comment, she widened her eyes and opened her mouth in shock. "Oh, that's disgusting!" she gasped. "Why, he wouldn't do anything of the kind. He told me that she tortured him, then put him under the Imperius Curse. And I believe him. He's good, and kind, and... a gentleman, which you, most certainly, are not!"

Charles laughed heartily. "Well, you know, most men wouldn't exactly call it torture, love." He leaned in closer and touched her cheek. "Perhaps you could use a bit of that 'torture' yourself. You seem to be wound a bit too tight. I can fix that."

Cassidy jerked backward. "Don't you dare!" she gasped. "And you're lying. I know you're lying. Tyler told me she tortured him until he had no choice but to give up. And then she put the curse on him! Why are you lying?"

"Or maybe he's lying," Charles replied. "Tell me, love, how well do you know him? How can you be really sure you can trust him? He betrayed the Order, you know. And he got caught. He might just be willing to say just about anything--and do just about anything--to avoid facing the blame. Including sweet talking a pretty little thing like you. I bet he's told you that he thinks you're pretty, hasn't he?"

Cassidy blushed. Tyler had told her just that. But she had kind of brought up the subject by voicing her insecurities. "Yes... but he was just saying it to be nice, because I told him the truth... that I'm not pretty. I'm plain and uninteresting, let's face it. But he wasn't trying to butter me up or anything." But she couldn't say for sure that she truly trusted him. She'd known him such a short time. And although her instincts told her to trust him, she still felt a nagging sense of doubt in the back of her mind. "So you're not going to help me, then, are you?" she said in an indignant tone.

Charles shook his head. "Not a bit," he replied. "In fact, I really don't know anything at all. And I deny ever being involved. So you can just move along and continue your investigation elsewhere. Was nice meeting you, though, love. I hope we meet again... and maybe you'll have a few drinks in you..." She gave her a sleazy grin.

Cassidy slapped him on the cheek. "You're very rude, do you know that? Well, since you've been completely useless, I guess I'll just be going. Thanks for nothing." She spun on her heels and walked away quickly.

"Well, good luck, then, love," Charles called after her, grinning. "Maybe I'll see you around. And don't turn your back on Jackson!" he added with a laugh. He took a long sip from his drink, feeling fairly satisfied that he had turned the girl off of his case... for now.

Bella had been reading a novel her mother had sent her, but promptly looked up as she heard the familiar sound of hand against face. She looked up from her book, to where the slap had sounded. She saw an unattractive woman storming away from a blond man. The woman passed Bellatrix's table as she left. Bella pulled her attention from the huffy woman to the man she had just hit. She wondered what she had missed while enthralled in her book, and decided to find out.
Dog-earing the page she had left on, she shut her book and carried it and her drink up to the bar and sat down, one barstool separating herself from the man. "I don't think she liked you too much," Bella said of Cassidy.

Charles shrugged and took a sip of his drink. "Yeah. Well, I get that a lot actually. I'm pretty used to it. I guess you could say my sense of humor takes some getting used to." He gave her a grin. "But you... you look more like the type who would get me. Haven't I seen you before? Weren't you at that meeting? With the Dark Lord?"

Bellatrix nodded, smiling. That was where she had seen him before, she thought he looked familiar. Once again she was astounded by these people's forwardness about the Dark Lord but the man looked like he had been hitting the bottle pretty hard lately and she said nothing of it. "Aye, I was there. But I didn't get your name."
