She'd only think that because you told her she was frightening me! She would play nice with Nicolas but the man still frustrated her. But he was also currently her only lifeline to the alternate reason Lyra had come to see Sam today. She was hoping Samantha had gone to check on Julian for her, as requested, but with the news of Christine's abduction there would have been no time.
"Wait," she said hesitantly. She was bloody stupid for what she was about to ask this man but being that she was indeed stupidly in love, she went ahead and asked. "Julian, is he...any better?" It was painful to think of Julian and having to ask Nicolas about it was even worse. It was clear by her face that she was concerned for Julian, but Nicolas wouldn't believe any emotions Lyra showed him.

Nicolas' nostrils flared slightly, but that was the only indication of his anger at her question. Rationally he knew that his friend was also responsible for this mess, but that Lyra could move on to Mason so quickly was what frustrated him. It was going to cause Julian even more pain, not to mention Mason and Julian's relationship would suffer because of her.
"He's fine." Nicolas said, he relented, "He's painting. He's better when he's painting."

Lyra could be very perceptive, especially when it came to reading men. So Nicolas' anger at her question was noticed and well understood. But she didn't care. Sam wasn't here and she didn't have to pretend to like Nicolas when they were in private.
"I didn't know that he and Mason were close. Honestly." She didn't know why she was explaining herself to Nicolas, as if he cared or would belief her. But she needed to say it aloud and he was there, so he would hear it as long as they were in the same room. "I knew they knew each other, but you all know everyone. And Sam never told me. I didn't mean to cock it up like this."

Despite what Lyra kept insisting, Nicolas didn't hate her, or automatically discount everything she said as being a con. It would have been much easier to observe her activity had she not eavesdropped on the conversation he had with Sam the other night. But now she was naturally antagonistic which didn't give him any incentive to believe any better from her.
"It doesn't matter now." he told her, "Damage done, as it were." he shrugged. That was his way of letting it go. He couldn't go back in time and tell Sam what a bad idea it was to hook Lyra up with Mason, so there was no use in moaning over it.

But it did matter to Lyra. it mattered an awful lot. Julian meant the world to her, she already knew she had hurt him by sleeping with him and making him feel as though he had betrayed Belle's memory. Knowing she would hurt him even further when he found out she was seeing one of his best mates was killing her. Lyra was caught, as now no matter what she did she couldn't see any happy way out. If she ended it with Mason she would be hurt, she truly did care for him. If she stayed with Mason, Julian would find out and hurt even further. And poor Mason was doomed either way.
She sighed and looked at her hands. She was being selfish again. She shouldn't have made this about herself and her problems. They both should have been focusing on Samantha right now.

Nicolas took a look around the room, seeing that there was nothing for him there he gave Lyra a nod and headed for the door just as Samantha was coming back in.
"I've brought tea. Nik where are you going?" she asked still an aura of bewilderment around her.
"I'm going to tend to your father's affairs while he focuses on helping your cousin. You're in good hands." he smiled at her and nodded toward Lyra. She gave him a brilliant, yet tremulous smile in return.
