Lyra smirked. "If you can get her to pull the reins on one of her schemes you will have to share your secret with me. A brick wall couldn't slow this one down. Merlin, how I've tried." Samantha was the type of person that, once she set her mind to something, would be undeterred.
"Sam tells me you were in the states for a year. Business or pleasure?"

Sam only smiled further, "Where's the fun in that? Besides I'm sure you'll land on your feet as you always do." she smiled.
She rolled her eyes when Lyra jumped in. She couldn't blame her friend, Sam did like to scheme. Sam was the type that always had to be moving, plotting, growing. Begin stagnant was worse than failure.

"Neither." he answered candidly. He was escaping his mother's machinations to get him married.
"I was running away."

"Oh," Lyra exclaimed, genuinely surprised at the man's honesty. She wanted to ask what he was running away from, but as he hadn't offered the information and she didn't know him from Adam, she thought it best to skirt the subject. "Well, thank you for coming back or else this" she gestured to Samantha and her ever-plotting mind, "would have been focused on me. I owe you," she said brightly.

Mason laughed, a deep rich laughter that suited him, "Indeed, I believe I deserve a reward for so great a sacrifice." he teased in return.
Meanwhile he avoided looking at Sam who was the victim of their humor. To his surprise however she looked rather amused herself when he did venture a glance.

She gave a small laugh, pleased to finally find someone here who knew how to banter. The majority of the people Lyra had spoken to this evening had been rather stiff or stuck up. She liked the idea of attending high end events, but clearly the people that accompanied those luxuries were not always the most pleasant. Sam had warned her as much before they arrived, but initially Lyra brushed it off believing she too knew about high society. As it turns out, Lyra was more familiar with upper middle class, which was apparently a completely different quidditch match.
"What are you planning to do now that you're back home?" Sit around and look gorgeous all day, she thought to herself.

"Plan my next escape of course." he answered, "What about you Miss Newbury? Feel like leaving the country?" he asked, a sincere and charming glint in his eyes.
Sam was being quiet, but at his remark she raised an eyebrow.
He chuckled again,"Don't worry Sam, I'd be on my best behavior."

Her cheeks twinged pink as she smiled at him. "Oh, I'm not sure I can. Sam would be completely lost at the magazine without me." She looked at her friend, who was being altogether too quiet. Lyra knew what she was thinking, and she rolled her eyes and smiled further.

"Indeed." Sam sighed as she rejoined the conversation. "Lyra's my new executive editor." she said proudly.
Sam knew she was being obvious, at least toward Lyra who knew her intentions. Mason either didn't know or didn't care. He was well used to the attention, but he seemed to be rather interested in Lyra on his own without Sam's prodding.

Lyra loved hearing her name accompanied by her new title. It made her feel important. She knew Samantha gave her the job because she sincerely believed Lyra to be capable, but the slight nagging at the back of her mind told her to not get too excited until the next issue came out. Then they would know for certain whether Samantha made the right decision.

"Quite impressive Miss Newbury." He said with a nod in Lyra's direction, "Then again, Sam has always been fortunate in her relationships."
It was true, Sam was very familiar with the who's who of their world. She knew who was worth knowing, and who was inconsequential. If Lyra had to pick a fairy godmother, she'd be hard pressed to find someone better than the darling Montgomery girl.

"That she has, " Lyra agreed. "And how is it that you two know each other?" Mason looked to be in his twenties, which wasn't such a strange age gap for Samantha but the dynamics of her social circle were rather interesting to Lyra, who's social life revolved mainly around school mates.

"Mason and I remember it a little differently." Sam said sweetly, while the man raised an eyebrow at her.
Of course they had known each other from the same elevated social circle for years, but he met the real Samantha Montgomery two years ago. Underestimating her because of her age had been his "downfall", however since then he had recovered substantially by making her an ally rather than enemy. It still startled him when he thought about how young she was, but once you knew Samantha you understood.

Lyra waited, expecting more to follow but Sam as ever was vague and skirted the question. With anyone else, this may have been a sign of some sordid history between the two, but Lyra was certain Samantha would not push her towards a man Samantha had already had. Lyra looked to Mason who was giving Samantha a look, and then back to Sam.
"Thank you, that clears it up perfectly," she teased. Lyra drank her champagne, awaiting more information. She expected it to come from Mason, though knowing nothing about this man he could quite possibly be even more obscure than Samantha.

"What Sam is conveniently not saying, is that she - at the tender age of fourteen mind you - tricked a man almost ten years her senior out of a most lucrative business deal."
"Clearly that's not how it happened." Sam said rolling her eyes.
"Oh?"
"I simply saved you from dealing with a most odious business partner, and introduced you to a better option."
"Uh huh. Although I will say things worked out for the best."
"I'll say, profits from last quarter are almost double what you predicted." Sam sniffed.

"I doubt it was very tender," Lyra muttered with a grin as Mason explained what Samantha had done. Anyone who met Samantha found out sooner or later that it didn't matter the girl's age. She could be 14, 16, or hell even 7 and Samantha would have found some way of poking her nose into something and coming out the other end with diamonds.
She listened to their banter, smirking at Samantha's confidence. Her friend was really something very special. And Mason was apparently loaded, on top of being devilishly handsome and the most intriguing person she'd talked to yet, aside from Julian and Samantha of course.

Sam's eyes glittered with mischief as Lyra remarked about the tenderness of Sam's age. Sam had never been tender, perhaps when she was very young she was less capable of being ruthless, but her Mother quickly saw to any tenderness or weakness Sam showed.
Despite the woman's best efforts however, Sam hadn't been destroyed. And while she may be capable of being cold, cruel, and at times merciless, for the people she cared about, Sam was more than tender.
"Please excuse me." she said finally, " Baroness Mandeville is beckoning." Sam inclined her head toward the elderly woman who was waving at her.
"I'm afraid if I don't go to her, she will come to us, and despite earlier contention concerning my tenderness, I shall spare you both."
Lyra had better appreciate this.
"Mason, I leave her in your capable hands."

Lyra looked in the direction Sam had gestured to, and found a harsh looking woman whom Lyra guessed was upwards of 70. She wore her jewelry as if she feared her staff would steal it if she left even one piece at home while she was away. Lyra laughed and stepped aside so Samantha could move around her.
Lyra wanted to make a comment before her friend left, about not needing anyone to watch over her in Samantha's absence, but clearly her tryst with Julian earlier proved Lyra wrong. She kept her mouth shut and watched for a moment as Sam headed for the elderly woman with a smile. Lyra looked back to Mason and smiled.

Mason was disappointed, but only for a moment. He needed to find the man he had come here to find and Sam was his best bet of locating the man. On the other hand his present company was more than welcome.
"She must trust me a great deal to abandon you. How did you meet Samantha?"

Lyra smirked, knowing Sam's true intentions. It was partly out of trust for Mason, as she would never have left Lyra alone with him if she didn't trust the man. But Sam was also forcefully shoving Lyra back into the dating scene in the hopes that Lyra would move on from Julian. Mason was a good start.
"We attended school together once Sam transferred to Hogwarts. We were in the same house, although I've since graduated." She answered Mason's question with ease making sure to point out that she was, in fact, a few years older than Samantha, in case he had any concerns that she might be too young.
