Dierks didn't really register Callie's blushing. He didn't think twice about being the reason behind her cheeks turning pink.
"I shoulda figured yer speciality would be butterflies," he replied in a light joking tone. Dierks gave her a wide smile. He liked to see Callie like this. She was joking around with him and everything felt easy.
"If you really wanna paint a butterfly, I couldn't deny you cause I did I'd let you pick whatever you wanted ter paint." He gave her a wink. "You could just surprise me with whatever you like. I'll like it."

"Oooookay then!" Linette clapped her hands together, trying to ease the awkwardness that Callie had created. "That was fun," she looked at Bobby, still in slight shock that Rabastan was beside her.
"Just give me one second?" She whispered to Chip, her eyes apologetic. "Dad, this is Chip," she squeezed his hand before letting go. "And that's Rabastan," She tried to keep her voice neutral. "You boys chat, I need to borrow Bobby for a little second," and before her sister could protest, she grabbed her hand and dragged her just out of earshot of the boys and their father.
"Okay, um..." Linette tried to put this as best she could. "I'm just going to come out and say it..." she took a deep breath. "WHAT THE HELL!"

Normally, Bobby would have gone after Callie. But not today, not for this. She was allowed to have her fun, and it was all innocent, anyway. It wasn't like she was going to marry the guy. So what was the big deal?
Unless Callie was jealous. That was the only logical explaination that Bobby could come up with, and when Linette dragged her aside, her eyes strayed to the two boys, who were now shaking their father's hands.
"Oh, come off it, Linny. It's just a bit of fun, okay? Besides, you dated him."

When Linette dragged Bobby away for a chat, Chip was left standing there with Rabastan and Mr. Sanders. It was... awkward, to say the least. Frankly, he agreed with just about everyone else when it came to Rabastan Lestrange. He was no good for Bobby... in fact, he was just no good at all. But Chip was a lover, not a fighter, and he was not about to start anything with Rabastan, especially not in front of the girls' father. It wasn't exactly his business, and he didn't want to alarm Mr. Sanders in anyway.
So he cleared his throat and smiled at the other two men. "So.... nice day for a carnival, isn't it?"

"You could just surprise me with whatever you like. I'll like it." Merlin, she was glad he was here. She couldn't even describe how much. He was distracting her mind from all of her worries about Bobby, and that was what she needed right now. If she had been alone, she was pretty sure she would have started to cry. And she hated crying in public. But instead of crying, she was smiling, thanks to him. "Well, I think you'd look good with a butterfly," she teased. "But I don't think it's quite right for you. I think I have a better idea for you." She began to mix some red paint, a mysterious smile on her face. "Now, no peeking. I'll show it to you when I'm done, OK?"

Dierks laughed. "I think you'd look better with one. I could paint one fer you but to be honest, my paintin' ain't that good. The only kind of paintin' I might be decent at other than paintin' walls would be finger paintin'."
He took a seat on the stool and turned a grin up at Callie. "I won't peek," he replied. He actually never had his face painted before, mainly because he used to not be able to sit still long enough. And there was also the fact that he used to help out at different things.
He looked forward to hanging out with Callie today. She was nothing like some people made her out to be. Of course those people didn't take the time to spend with her.

Callie laughed. It was strange how easily he had managed to calm her down. She felt incredibly relaxed right now, and very comfortable with him. This was very rare for her to let her guard down with anyone but her sisters, let alone a boy.
When she was finished stirring the red paint, she loaded her brush with paint and held it up, getting ready to paint his face. "OK, just look over to your left, OK? Over towards the merry-go-round."

"Yes ma'am," he said as he turned his head toward the merry go round. Dierks knew that he was going to have to meet Callie's father sometime today. He wasn't nervous to meet her father. From what she told him about him, Dierks figured that he might get along with him. He wasn't sure why he wanted to really get along with her father but he wanted to make a good impression.
He hoped that Callie wanted to go around and possibly go on a few rides later on. Dierks didn't mind hanging around the face painting booth for awhile but he wanted to go with her other places as well and maybe get cotton candy.

Callie began to paint on his cheek, smiling softly. She liked his polite way of speaking. It was strange how British people had the reputation for having good manners, but most boys she knew were not nearly as polite and well-mannered as this American boy.
But thinking about English boys made her think about Rabastan again and what he was doing with Bobby. Had he already dragged her off somewhere? What was his plan?
"Hey... um... I was wondering.... Did you know that Rabastan Lestrange was showing some interest in Bobby?"

Linette sighed in frusteration. "Fine, you knwo what, I don't care." she held up her hands. "I'll find Callie and take care of her later. I just hope you know that the only reason I'm giving up so easily is because I trust that pretty little head on your shoulders." Linette looked over to the boys and then back to Bobby. Linette never got angry. Well, not never, but hardly. She had mastered, instead, the art of being disappointed. And this time she was. "And I trust that you'll make better decisions, because you're probably the most sensible out of the three of us."
"And, for the matter. Dating Rabastan Lestrange was probably the worst mistake in my life. There's reasons I don't talk about it Bobby." She shook her head. "There's no such thing as innocent with Rabastan Lestrange."
And that was that. Linette turned, not sure if Bobby would follow her or not. She would take care of everything and watch out for Bobby and make sure Callie was okay and be sure that her dad wasn't too overwhelmed and keep an eye on Rabastan and on top of all that, have a good day with Chip, who she prayed wouldn't feel ignored.
"Kay Daddy we're off," she went and kissed her dad on the cheek. See you later in the day," and she walked to Chip, took his hand, and walked away from the group de drama. "I'm sorry bout all the drama," Linette said to Chip.

His thoughts were drifting in and out as he was singing a song in his mind, but it came to a quick end as Callie spoke up again. Dierks wasn't sure what exactly to say to that question. How did Callie find out about Rabastan being around Bobby? Did she happen to bring him along with her?
"I knew he talked to her," he said. Dierks didn't like Rabastan. In fact, he was pretty sure not many people did like him, except the few poor girls that fell for him. He knew that Linny went out with Rabastan before but he didn't know all of the details. He just knew that Rabastan wasn't good news.
"I ain't seen her too much lately so I don't know how much interest he's showed in her other than the little bit from when he talked to her the first time." That part was truthful. "Did she bring him with her?"

Callie sighed softly. A part of her understood why Bobby was allowing herself to fall for Rabastan's act. Linette had always been the boldest of the three of them when it came to boys. Callie covered a lot of her shyness with attitude, while Bobby befriended any boy that came along. But Callie knew that, deep down, she and Bobby weren't that different. Unlike Linette, who was just looking to have fun, Bobby was looking for someone to love her and treat her like she was special, just as Callie did. The problem with Bobby was that she was so friendly that boys tended to forget that she wasn't one of the guys. And the ones that did like her as more than just a friend, like Neil, were too shy to tell her so. And Rabastan came along with his handsome face and pretty words and perfectly practiced manners, how could Bobby not be interested? But his reputation was hard to ignore, and surely Bobby was smart enough not to fall for his lies?
She hadn't answered Dierks yet, and she caught him looking at her out of the corner of his eye while she painted his cheek.
"Yeah, she did bring him. I was so mad, I had to walk away... Can't she see what that guy is? She's so much better than him..."

A bad feeling washed over him when Callie didn't answer him right after. The answer was already evident right after the question was asked. She didn't have to answer the question because of the expression Dierks caught.
"She is," he agreed. It puzzled Dierks as to why Bobby would even bring him. He thought that she knew the kind of guy Rabastan was. What was it that seemed to be clouding her judgement? Even Dierks knew there was not really a such a thing as Rabastan having female friends. "I don't even know why she brought him. She didn't even tell me that she was bringin' him or anythin'."

"She didn't tell me, either," Callie replied. "She knew how I'd react, and she didn't want to hear it. I just don't get it. I know there are tons of guys who would love to go out with her. And most of them are pretty good guys. Why does she go for the worst possible guy she can find? Rabastan Lestrange is, like, the reason I hate men. Well, most of them, anyway. Present company excluded, of course."
She smiled shyly at that and caught his eye again. "I'm really glad you could come today. I think I needed a break from my sisters."

Callie's last comment made a pink tint cover Dierks' face. He wasn't sure what Rabastan had planned for Bobby but it couldn't be good. Hopefully Bobby would be wise enough to not let it happen. "Glad you don't hate me," he said with light smile, careful to not move his cheek too much.
"You invited me to come, so I did." It wasn't exactly a direct invitation. She just sort of mentioned it to him but Dierks took it as an invitation coming from Callie. "I figured we could have a little bit of fun today. Everybody needs a break every now and again don't they?"

Callie's cheeks felt warm, and she looked away, focusing on her work. "Well, you're pretty different from Rabastan Lestrange," she assured him.
In that moment, she came to a decision. She was not going to spend her whole day worrying about Bobby. Why let Bobby and Rabastan ruin her whole day? It was a beautiful day, she was with a boy she liked, and carnivals were meant to be fun, weren't they? Bobby had made her own decision, and even if Callie thought it was a mistake, it was her mistake to make, wasn't it? But Merlin help Rabastan Lestrange if he crossed Callie's path. She was pretty sure she knew what his game was, and she intended to make sure he knew it.
And if he hurt Bobby....
No. No, she wasn't going to think about that now. She was going to concentrate on Dierks. "Well, I'm only supposed to be here at the face painting booth until 2:00. Then we can hang out the rest of the day."

"Till 2, I believe I can wait that long. I can hang around here fer a bit. I used ter could make those little ballon animal things, but all I could make was a weird lookin' giraffe." Dierks gave a light laugh.
"After we leave here, we can go wherever." Dierks' favorite ride was the Ferris Wheel. He liked going up and seeing everything. It made him feel like he was on top of the world and hopefully Callie wouldn't mind going. He didn't think she was afraid of heights.
"Although while we're here, I can entertain the kids if you like while they wait in line fer their faces ter be painted."

Callie hadn't been exactly sure what he would do while she was working at the booth. It didn't seem fair to ask him to wait there for her, but here he was offering to do just that. He was a gentleman, and that made her smile.
"You don't have to wait for me," she said, switching brushes as she began to add some blue paint to her creation. "But it's nice of you to do it, anyway. In fact, if you wouldn't mind, maybe you could get me a snack when I'm done with your painting? I think there's a kettle corn stand nearby... I can smell it and it's driving me crazy."

"I do believe I can do that." Dierks didn't mind waiting there for her. He could find ways to keep himself as well as the children entertained for awhile. Plus, he didn't want to just start walking around. There wouldn't be many people he would know and he would just feel bad if he left Callie behind.
"I think I saw that stand on my way over here and I believe they had those candy apples too." He loved carnivals and festivals. Those things meant funnel cakes, candy apples, and cotton candy, three of his favorite things. "What else would you want me to get you? Somethin' ter drink?"

Callie switched colors a third time, pausing to clean her brush and then stir the white paint before she began applying it to his face. "I love candy apples, but those will have to wait until I'm done at the booth... they're too messy. Kettle corn is good for now. And maybe a coke?"
As much as she loved working at the face painting booth, she really couldn't wait until she was done and could spend the day walking around with Dierks. This was the first time in a few years when she wasn't forced to spend the day tagging along behind one of her sisters and their male companions. Last year she had actually spent most of the time with her father.
"Anyway, I'm almost done with you," she said. "And the kids should be getting here soon."
