(Since I got outed yesterday...)
It was a very rare moment for Heather. Her work was all finished, her classes were over for the day, and she had practiced earlier, so she found herself with nothing to do. Heather rarely took the time to relax, and truthfully, she wasn’t very good at relaxing. It made her feel anxious and nervous, like there was something else that she should have been doing.
She was sitting in the lounge, which was empty for the moment. Classes were still in session, so she was alone. It was a strange feeling, to be alone with nothing to do. It made her mind think thoughts that she really didn’t want to be having. Although she had a book in her lap, she kept re-reading the same paragraph over and over again while her mind wandered.
Mostly she was thinking about her best friend. She worried for Daphne, who just seemed to be too sweet, too sensitive for the rest of the world. People like Brenda were going to chew her up and spit her out, and Heather couldn’t bear to see it. Daphne was worth so much more than a tramp like Brenda.
Sometimes Heather just wanted to hold her friend, to protect her from the world and fight off the people who wanted to hurt her or use her. And sometimes… Sometimes she had these feelings that confused her.
A thought had occurred to Heather a while back and she was having trouble getting it out of her head. When she was alone, that was when the thoughts seemed to run out of control. She had always got along well with boys, but she had never had any interest in dating them. She noticed when guys were cute, but she also found herself looking at the girls. And the feelings she had for Daphne went beyond friendship. Although she had made excuses about wanting to finish her education before she joined the Harpies, the real reason she had stayed here at Hogwarts for her seventh year was because of Daphne. She needed to make sure she was going to be OK. Heather had never put a name on in before, but she was starting to realize that it was love.
But once she realized that, she kind of pulled away from Daphne, losing herself in her work and her practicing. She obviously couldn’t act on what she was feeling. Daphne liked boys. And the last thing Heather wanted to do was to make Daphne uncomfortable. So Heather suffered this secret in silence, not sure if she could tell anyone, even her brother. What would Micah think of her if he knew she was gay? She couldn’t bear it if he turned against her.
These thoughts were weighing heavily on her, and feeling certain that she was alone, she gave in to her emotions. Her book closed with a snap as she burst into tears.
