Riley's attention was on him while he spoke to her, and Riley was entirely unaware of what he was about to do. The sunset seemed to be burning in his eyes, and she even felt the perfectness of the moment, though she didn't realize quite what that meant.
She remained silent through his speech, leaning into his hand. Until he asked her to marry him again, and she sat up straighter, pulling away. "Roland..."
But it was perfect. He didn't mention anything about the baby, which was one of her biggest fears. It was all about them, about her and Roland, and she felt so much the same way. She couldn't imagine spending her life without him.
When she saw the ring, she turned into an absolute girl and covered her mouth for a moment before she reached out to trace her fingers over it. It was a perfect ring, a perfect moment, the perfect man. Her eyes went back to his, and she couldn't find her voice for a minute. He was looking at her with so much love in his eyes.
She nodded slowly.

He felt like he was going to burst as he searched her face, waiting for an answer. He could see that she was overwhelmed, and he was, too, really. Even if she said no, everything about her face was saying yes. And then she nodded. He was sure he was going to burst of happiness, but somehow he managed to find his voice.
"Yeah?" he said, still not able to release the breath he was holding. "We don't have to to it right away.... we can wait until you're ready... we can take all the time in the world..."
He took the ring out of the box and held it out to her, poised to slip it on her finger.

Riley's smile widened as she nodded again. "Yeah, Roland. Yes, I mean."
Her eyes were drawn to the ring again, and she held her hand out to him, waiting for him to slide the ring on her finger. When he did, it sent a funny feeling down her spine, one not unpleasant.
She looked at it on her finger, and couldn't help the moment. She felt tears well up in her eyes, and she leaned forward, placing her hands on Roland's cheeks, kissing him deeply as she cried.
"I love you so much," she whispered against his lips. "I'm ready. We don't have to wait. I mean, we'll need a little time to plan it and everything, but I wouldn't have said yes if I thought either of us wasn't ready."

Once he slid the ring onto her finger, he was finally able to breathe again. He pulled her close to him, kissing her deeply. He felt the tears on her cheeks, and although he felt the need to wipe them away, he held himself back. For the first time, he understood how the depth of emotion between them was enough to make her cry. His own eyes were a little bit moist as well.
"I love you, too," he breathed. "So much. I can't wait to begin our life together."
For the first time, he turned partway and looked over at the sunset. It truly was breathtaking, and he could see how the colors in the sky were reflected in the water, making it almost impossible to tell where the sky ended and the water began. In a way, it reminded him of him and Riley, the way two totally different forces appeared to merge together seamlessly.
Turning back to her, he kissed her softly, then whispered against her lips, "Want to go back to the hotel?"

"We've already started our life together. Roland, where have I been since New Year's Eve? With you. Together... I'm sorry I made you wait so long for this." She didn't need to tell him that he'd done well... her answer would have told him as much. They were both ready, mature enough, and it was clear that he'd thought it through this time.
His question made her laugh, though, and she pulled away, wiping the tears from her cheeks. "Did you propose to get lucky again? Because I was planning on having my way with you tonight anyway," she teased him. Her smile faded again, and she just watched him for a moment. What she felt for him went so far beyond what she could even understand. "We can go back," she said at length. "Hey," she said quickly, taking his hand in her left and pressing it to her stomach, her ring on top. "We're going to be a family."

When he thought about it, it was all really happening so fast. Just a few months ago, they had still hated each other. And now, here they were, in love, engaged, and about to start a family. The practical side of him, which had long since disappeared, would have cautioned him to take it slowly. But he also knew deep down inside that everything about this was right. He loved her with everything he had, and she loved him the same way. They had fought the world to be together.
He chuckled low in his throat. "I know perfectly well I don't need to propose in order to get lucky," he replied with a sleepy smile. "Besides, the lucky part is that you said yes."
He felt his breath catch in his throat when she put her hand over her stomach. The baby still wasn't noticeable yet, but it soon would be. But seeing her like that, wearing the engagement ring, and holding her hand over her stomach... it made it all so real. This was really happening... they were going to be a family.
He kissed her, then took her hand. "Come on, let's go," he said. "We have a lot to celebrate."

Riley laughed, getting up with him when he took her hand. Merlin, it felt so perfect to be young and in love. She wished they could capture this moment and hold it forever.
"Hold on, we have to grab the blanket," she said, breaking away from his hand and shaking out the blanket before she quickly stuffed it into the bag they brought. It was less than a minute before she slipped her hand back into his and they hurried back to the hotel, the sun now hidden under the water. The world of work, stress, and London, was long forgotten for the evening.
(The end)
