Christine was restless, something in her sleep had kept her from dreaming long and she was up before all the other Montgomeries.
"Morning Jensen." she said greeting their butler who seemed to be up before the sun even rose and down long after everyone else had gone to bed.
"Morning M'um" he said in his gracious tone, "An early breakfast?" he inquired, the house elves could certainly fix something up though breakfast wasn't to begin for a few hours yet.
"No that's alright, just some tea and toast, and the morning paper." she wanted to read about the dance and what else had gone on, perhaps to see if she or Sam were in the paper.
"Right away M'um" he said disappearing to get the items she requested. She took a turn about the halls and came into one of the sitting rooms that faced the east gardens, she always thought they were pretty at Dawn.
Jensen returned with her requests and left the room, a moment later glass shattered as a tea cup hit the floor, but what caused him to turn quickly was his mistress's distressed voice.
"No...No it can't be... No!" Christine cried before dropping the paper and running out of the house, she didn't know where she was going, she only knew she had to get away.
****
"Master Montgomery! Sir!" Jensen said knocking on James' and Lillian's door. "It's urgent, you must awaken!"
The butler who was more like a family friend, still had never usually broken conformity and certainly never shouted at his employers.

James was already awake, though not really out of bed yet, when the knocking came at the door.
He felt something cold seize his gut. His first thought was that something happened to Christine, and he was out of bed instantly, throwing the door open.
"What? What is it?"

"Miss Montgomery has left the grounds after seeing this sir..." the butler said a bit redfaced, he was an old man who had climbed a countless amount of stairs to get to James, but still he didn't lose composure taking a deep much needed breath he straightened his posture. Christine leaving wouldn't have been such a big deal at all but the paper in Jensen's hands explained why her being alone and having run away might not have been the greatest thing.

Geoffrey learned the news in much the same way as Christine. Nursing a mild hangover from his New Year's Eve celebration with some friends, he settled in to sip some coffee and eat a bowl of cereal when the paper arrived. He had opened the window to let the delivery owl in, and once he had taken the paper and slipped his payment into the little pouch, he dropped the paper on the table without looking at it.
He fixed his coffee and cereal and carried them back to the table. He took a sip of his coffee before turning the paper around to see the shocking headline.
"Oh, Merlin...." he murmured, shocked. He read the article with an open mouth, then set the paper down again, staring. No. No, it couldn't be true...
But it was. This wasn't some hangover-induced nightmare... it was real.
He got up from the table and went to get dressed, his breakfast now forgotten. His first thought was to go to Riley, but he banged on her door for a full five minutes with no answer. He stood in the hallway for a long time, staring over at the door to his cousin's apartment. He couldn't believe it. Roland couldn't be gone.
Finally he decided to go home and check on Christine and his parents. There would probably be a family gathering.
With his heart heavy, Geoffrey apparated to the Montgomery mansion and burst into the house without notice. "Christine? Mum... Dad... have you heard?"

Lillian was exhausted from the night before. She had insisted upon waiting for the girls to return from the dance while she and James celebrated their own new years. James, damn him, could usually drink her under the table if he so wished and appear completely sober the next morning whereas a glass of wine would likely do her in. She hadn't been sleeping all too well either because of the attack and Christine's meloncholy mood.
Jenson's pounding didn't wake her but seemingly when Geoffrey walked through the door her eyes shot open as if from a nightmare, something had happened, something was wrong.
Her eyes scanned the room for her husband, when she found him she came quickly to his side. "What is it James?"

Edward was the first one to greet Geoffrey downstairs since he was the only one awake at this hour, he had an early meeting with the board about some business this or that and needed to get up earlier because of it.
"Woah Geoff, slow down, your parents are still asleep, as is Christine I would imagine after the ball last night, what is it? What's wrong?"

Geoffrey stared at his uncle for a minute, almost not even sure what to say. Uncle Edward had no real family ties to the Ferreras, and Geoff wasn't entirely sure if he would know who Roland even was.
He swallowed. "Something horrible happened last night. It was in the paper. I just... I need to see Christine. If she saw the article... It'll kill her."

"Geoff?" sleepy-eyed Samantha still looked like a princess as she descended the steps and smiled at her cousin. She finished the steps to reach him then took in his worried appearance, "What's wrong?" she asked, although she had heard something about Christine and she bit her lip, "She wasn't in her room this morning." she said offering that tidbit. Christine had fallen into an exhausted slump in Sam's room and they had slept. Sam realized that Christine hadn't slept peacefully and that fit in well with Sam's own discomfort, but she managed to fall asleep one moment and when next she woke Christine was gone. Samantha figured she had gone back to her own room, however when Samantha decided she'd be up for good she had paused to check in on her cousin who wasn't there.
She looked at her father who had a weary and alert expression on his face, he was already summoning one of the house elves to check with Jenson to see if their butler had seen her.

Geoffrey couldn't help it, at the sight of Samantha, he threw his arms around her. Another cousin he'd almost lost. She was OK now, slowly getting back to her normal self. But in losing Roland, it now really hit him how close he'd come to losing her.
"Hey, Sam," he said, smiling sadly at her. "I'm glad you're feeling better. It's just... I need to find Christine. And my parents. We... um.... there's been an accident. One of our cousins, Roland Ferrera... he was killed last night. It was in the Prophet."

Samantha was surprised at being held so tightly but she returned the hug trying to calm her cousin down. When he told them what happened she gasped.
Edward stepped forward at the news, "No..." there was grief written in his expression. He was a man who deeply valued family and ties. He knew the Ferrera's and never hesitated to make the connection known to them, should they have ever needed him. He and Lillian had been friends for many years through his brother's marriage, and naturally he cared for her. He kept tabs on all his family members, extended or not.
This came as a surprise to him, and he was neither used to, nor did he appreciate surprises. Then as his mind whirled, "Christine..." he whispered, indeed if the girl saw that who knew what she would do, perhaps that was what Jenson was about earlier.

Saying it aloud brought it all home to him and Geoffrey began to shake. Roland was dead. This would change everything. The attack at Hogsmeade had not hit him quite this hard. Yes, Sam and Cyrus and Jamie had all been injured in the attack, but they had all survived. And Geoffrey himself had not experienced the attack directly. He'd been at the Ministry at the time and only heard about it through the WNN. But this... losing a family member... one who'd seemed so strong and confident and invincible... it was very hard to take.
Abruptly he lunged toward the stairs. "Mum... Dad... I have to talk to them..."

Edward was about to interupt when Samantha intercepted him, " Geoff, why don't you sit down for a minute catch your breath. Get your words together before you tell them, this is sure to come as a shock."Even more distressing was the fact that Christine wasn't in her room nor in Sam's, the place had many hidey holes yet Samantha was filled with foreboding as if she knew Christine was gone.
"We'll send for Uncle James and Aunt Lillian." she nodded at her father who nodded proudly back at her for keeping her head, then quit the room to go find his brother.
