"Yeah, we met," Jarred said, knowing that Edward would realize that was not the sister that was watching Evie. "She's... beautiful," he said, then shook his head. "I didn't say anything to her. She showed me her brother, though." He let that hang in the air for a moment, then followed it up with, "He's yours?"

Edward shook his head no, "No...that's Caleb he..." he and Jarred did look remarkably similar it was uncanny but he tucked the thought away, "He's not your brother, I mean he is...I mean he's my step son." Edward said clarifying.
"I'm sorry...I don't know what to say...or do...this is so very unexpected..." he said finally a little sheepish.

"Oh. We look alike, I thought..." he trailed off. Obviously he was wrong.
He stood up. "I know, and I'm very, very sorry. I just wanted to meet you, but I didn't think it out very far, and I don't think I quite know what to say or do either. I'll just go."
He was stopped from moving, however, when someone else entered the room.

"Edward, darling, the house elves said you were down here, and-"
She looked up, seeing James, which didn't bother her, and another man that for a split second could have been Caleb... but a mother always knows her own child, and that was not Caleb. But there were definitely similarities. She looked from him to Edward, her facial expression faltering, and then smiled.
"Well, hello. I didn't know we had a guest."

"What? Wait no don't go-" he said jumping to his feet prepared to bar the door. He had just found his son he wasn't going to let him go right away for the world. Sheryl came in and he nodded toward her, she was always beautiful and breath taking when she walked into a room, but Edward couldn't linger on her, he was desperate, "Please...stay for dinner...at least." he said to Jarred.

When her father mentioned her she tensed wondering indeed if anyone knew she was out here eavesdropping, this was just like something Christine would do, Samantha was supposed to be more dignified. Pfft. She had eavesdropped many times in her life and there was nothing dignified about it, but sometimes it saved your life, and other times it inadvertently introduced you to your brother. Sam smiled.

Jarred stopped, feeling like he really should decline dinner. He felt like he already put Edward through enough, and staying for dinner might be extremely awkward, especially if family members kept appearing about of the woodwork.
"Good afternoon, ma'am," he said to Sheryl, and then shook his head at Edward. "I promised Charlotte I would pick my daughter up soon."

Edward swallowed a few times, he wanted to bar the doors, he was tempted. He wanted to know his son, wanted to...hell he didn't know but he didn't want the man to leave, and yet he was so unsure how to approach the man that he did what he did with Samantha, and that was back off.
It was so out of character for him, the rest of the family knew that, but when it came to Samantha he usually let her do whatever it was she wanted, perhaps because he didn't feel worthy of being her father, no more did he feel worthy of being Jarred's either.
Finally he nodded, " You'll...come by again?" he dared to hope.

James almost rolled his eyes, fairly certain that, given that choice, Jarred wouldn't come back. Unless he wanted money, what reason would he have to?
For the first time since being in Edward's office earlier, he spoke up. "Why don't you pick up your daughter and bring her to dinner as well? We know how to feed babies," he said, then raised his eyebrows as if he knew Jarred couldn't say no.
"Edward, you wouldn't mind, would you?"

"What?" he asked, the hope returning to his voice, "No, no of course not." there was a light smile touching his lips, Jarred had no idea how badly he wanted to force his hand, had no idea the restraint nor the power that Edward Montgomery had at his disposal, or just how much power Jarred would have over Edward if he decided to stay.
James was a little more logical, a little more removed, certainly there were times when James was nonsensical and didn't have his head on straight, but children just so happened to be Edward's weakness.

Samantha hadn't stayed to hear her uncle intervene, and so she had gone outside to await Jarred. She would talk to him herself before he took off, and see if he could resist her...she really hoped he couldn't, for her father's sake if not for her own.
Arms akimbo she looked like a fiery little sprite ready to go into battle.

"I don't know."
He didn't want Evie involved in all of this, which was why Charlotte was watching her in the first place. But he also didn't want to be an inconvenience to these people.
However, at the helpless look from Edward, and the knowing look from James, he backed down. "All right. I'll come back after I get my daughter."
He left without much ado, and ran into Samantha outside.

" I can't believe you said no." she started off a bit angry. She hadn't heard him say he would come back later, and his refusal had hurt her, she didn't know why but it had.
"What did you come here for if you weren't going to stick around? You can't just appear in someone's life, tell them you're their son and then say goodbye. It's not fair." the last note of her sentence came off a bit petulant, showing the true fifteen year old girl she was, but at the same time her eyes told a different story. One that said how well she knew that life wasn't fair.
"You are staying for dinner." she said with authority as if she had the final say. "He's been hurt enough with what my mother put him through, to finally meet you and have you walking out on him is just cruel. If you didn't want to get to know him you shouldn't have come here, he should never have known you existed, because now you'll be haunting him for the rest of his life and the only way to fix that is by staying."
Finally she softened a bit, her tone a bit more pleading, her anger was half bluff half desperation, "he's...he's really a very good man...and he deserves...he deserves a chance...and so do I..."she said her head lowered and her eyes no longer meeting his.

Jarred raised his eyebrows, caught offguard by the girl, and he backed up a couple feet. He could tell she wasn't at her most angry, and heaven help the person who put her there. He would bet she had quite a tempor, as even this was a little intimidating, especially from a young girl.
"Hey," he said softly, "Calm down. I'm coming back. I have to pick someone up first. Is that okay?" He asked, not sarcastically, but honestly asking her permission.

"Oh.." she said a little sheepishly, her cheeks turned a becoming red and her hands fidgeted behind her back,"Oh...I feel a little foolish now..." she said averting her eyes. Then her resolve came back and she shot him with a piercing gaze, "You promise?" she asked. There was a note in her voice that said how little she believed in promises and yet she had asked him to promise anyway as if he could be trusted to keep his word, but it was a commitment as well if he didn't come back she would never believe anything he said ever again.

Edward had gone to the windows to see his son leaving, he couldn't stand that bone deep ache he felt or how crushed he was finding out he had a son after all these years, even if Jarred did leave and never come back, Edward needed all that he could have which is what prompted him to watch Jarred leave.
Instead however he saw his daughter, the quiet and shy, and most definitely proper girl, flying off the handle at her brother demanding that he stay. It, in the middle of this chaos made him smile, made him actually laugh, before he walked outside.
He didn't know why he felt as if he were a superhero, or perhaps just the greatest man in the world. It probably had a lot to do with his daughter's quick defense and angry tirade on his behalf, but it went a long way in restoring Edward to his previous throne of glory and confidence, enough to join them outside anyway.
"She's quite dificult to say no to." he said smiling at his daughter, but keeping his eyes on Jarred.

Samantha blushed, it was becomming but she was lightly embarassed she hadn't meant to be so...forward? Well of course she had meant to be forward, but she had been genuinely hurt that this man had come and said what he had and then just as quickly planned on leaving.
She understood, or later at least would understand his hesitancy to get involved at all with this new family, she understood that feeling well. It had been hard to accept her father's love when she first came to live with them again, but her father had healed so many hurts it was very hard not to love him, and hard to keep him out of her heart, so she stopped trying, and now he was the most important man in her life, she loved her father, and she wanted this ...stranger...merlin, her brother, to love him too. Perhaps even, she wanted to be loved by this stranger as well, because brothers and fathers and uncles, they cared about you, they loved you, and they'd do anything to make you happy, she was learning, and she liked that feeling.
"I'm sorry..."
