Jarred frowned ever so slightly. "About 20 or 21 years since you've seen her, right?" He asked, and took a step forward, reaching into his coat. He thought it was pretty clear now what he was hear for. Even if he wasn't quite sure.
He pulled out the letter than was left with him as a baby, which detailed most everything, and handed it to Edward. "It's from Lorraine. To me... but I still think you might want to read it, sir."

Samantha stared curiously at Jarred this conversation having taken a strange turn indeed. Her father had taken the letter, and Samantha really wished she could read what it said. She gave her father a questioning look but he appeared to be absorbed in the note.
She noticed that the color began to drain from his face and she stepped toward him, "Father..." she inquired with no effect, "Papa...?" she tried again.
When he finally looked at her it was as if he were looking through her then with sudden clarity he cleared his throat, "Samantha...would you give me a moment with Mr. Donn-" he glanced at his son again some of the agony written on his face, "With Jarred, please?" he asked.
She didn't want to leave. She really didn't want to leave, she took another look up at Jarred confusion set in her eyes and a bit of hardness, she had liked him when he came through the door, but she had never seen anyone upset her father so much except for her mother and whatever was in that letter apparently upset him.
She was lost in thought when her father nudged her, "Go on, tell Jensen to put another seat down for dinner." he said guiding her out of the sitting room. When she was gone he focused on...Merlin, on his son.
"May I..." he coughed a bit uncomfortably, " See your hand please...?"

Jarred watched Samantha, his own eyes staying soft. She was his sister. Half sister, but still.
Edward's awkward cough brought his attention back to the man, and he raised his eyebrows. Of all the responses he had considered, being asked for his hand was not among them. It was an odd question, especially for the news he had just delivered, and he was hesitant.
James, standing behind Edward, did not look nearly as confused. He'd figured out, ithout reading the letter, what was going on, and was keeping his silence for now.
"I'm sorry?" Jarred asked.

There was next to zero doubt in his mind that the grown man in front of him was his son and yet there were many people who wouldn't mind hurting him with a stunt like this. There were several other reasons to just simply be sure, Edward had to be sure.
"Your hand...your right hand please." he said again.

Samantha informed one of the house elves to inform their butler and then went to eavesdrop just outside the hallway. Like she would miss any of this. When her father asked Jarred for his hand she frowned and lifted her own hand. She didn't understand what was going on at all, but then again Edward never had to prove that she was his daughter.

Well, it was still on odd request, but now just a more specific one.
He hesitated a second longer, looking to James who offered no help whatsoever, and then held out his right hand, watching Edward closely.
If he had known that Samantha was just outside, listening in, he probably would have laughed. He would have been doing the exact same thing, so he couldn't blame her.
As it was, he didn't know, and his stomach was in knots.

Without needing to use his wand Edward murmured the incantation that made a design appear on Jarred's hand. It was their family's crest, it was something that identified Jarred as a Montgomery, it was a mark that should have been activated at birth.
Seizing Jarred's hand and making the mark appear had several reasons to it. Proof for Edward that this was his son, proof for Jarred that indeed Edward was his biological father, and activating a certain charm that would allow Jarred access to any of the Montgomery estates. If he was Edward's son, then indeed it was only his birthright that he be able to have what should have been his long ago.
But Edward was still less prepared to have it confirmed, "My god..." he whispered angrily. There was a familiar tick in his jaw that James would notice, it was the one he got whenever Marrion had refused to let him see Sam, now that tick in his jaw was even more tense. Lorrie hadn't just kept Jarred away, but she hadn't even let Edward know that he existed. He had a fully grown son!
Staring at Jarred he couldn't even begin to put words together...and then his eyes hardened, not toward Jarred but at something over Jarred's shoulder, he was picturing his hands around Lorraine's neck right then, " I'd like to speak with your mother, where is she?"

Jarred's eyes never met Edward's. He kept them on his hand, and wondered just what, exactly, was going on. He didn't like being the one that didn't know things... the slight advantage he had coming here was gone.
"I don't know," Jarred said, shaking his head a little. "I have no idea where she is."
He had never known... it wasn't like the woman stuck around. Edward, he could forgive. He didn't know. But his mother... Catherine... they had no excuse.

"My god I could strangle her...has she taken care of you? " then he frowned, "Wait...why don't you know where she is?" he asked, he had no idea that he was in for even more of a shock. He still hadn't released Jarred's hand...it was his son's hand, his son who was a man fully grown, such news could reduce a man to tears, Edward was perilously close but only James would be able to see that.

Jarred was still, not even moving his hand. He was in Edward's home, giving him the news, so he thought it best if he just let Edward run the show for a few minutes.
"I... she might be in Ireland... that's my best guess, but I really don't know. She gave me to a friend of her family's. I've never met her." Not that he'd remember. You couldn't really know someone as a baby.
It was then that he finally pulled away from Edward. "That was the letter she left with me." 21 years ago.

"She left you with..." Edward's mouth had fallen. James would see how much this was affecting Edward. It was hard to affect a man like Edward simply because of everything that Edward had been through in life, this had floored him, had hurt him in ways he didn't know he could have been hurt.
"Why didn't she bring you to me...?" he asked in a strained whisper, not really expecting an answer, how could Jarred have known?
"What you must think of me..." he said shaking his head and running a hand through his hair, he moved to the sofa, "You're my son for Merlin's sake!" he hadn't raised his voice but the ragged tone in his words was enough to startle those nearby.
He wanted to run, really he wanted to stay out of reach from the agony that descended on his shoulders, how could Lorriane have done this to him? Still he owed more to this boy than that, trying to reign in his emotions, " You have been...well taken care of haven't you....I mean..." he felt so ill at ease, how did he do this? How was he supposed to talk to his son?

Jarred's eyes once again met James', unsure of what to do. James just gesture him to one of the chairs, and Jarred obliged. He felt a little weak on his feet anyway.
"I don't know," he answered Edward's first question. "I guess... she didn't know she was pregnant until she already left you, and maybe she thought you wouldn't take me. Or maybe she thought you would, and that scared her more? I don't blame you for any of this. She made it clear in her letter that you didn't know."
The next question was easier to answer, and he nodded. "Yes. I've been... I was raised by a very lovely family."

She gasped, though she doubted anyone heard her. Her heart was pounding wildly, Jarred was Edward's son, Jarred was her brother. She was surprised certainly, but didn't really know how to feel. It almost explained how she had felt about him when she first met him, and in a strange unexplainable way she wanted to go and hug him as if he were a belated Christmas gift.

He nodded, just absorbing the information, " But you..." he said hesitantly, " You were never curious about who I was?" there was no blame in his voice whatsoever, perhaps a little hurt. He didn't know that Jarred hadn't known about him either until just recently.

Jarred's brows knit for a second, and then it dawned on him that Edward thought Jarred had always known.
"No... it's not like that. Something happened recently... " He trailed off, not wanting to tell Edward that their romances had ended so similarly. He would have killed Catherine if she kept Evie a secret from him. "I just read that letter for the first time a couple months ago. My parents... the people that raised me... just thought it would be easier if I didn't know."

What was the excuse they gave for not wanting *me* to know? Edward thought bitterly but didn't voice it. It was obvious his son cared very much for the people who had raised him, and Edward owed at least that they had taken care of him, but they still had no right to keep Jarred a secret from him.
"Twenty one..." he said shaking his head, " I would have..." he swallowed he didn't know how to tell Jarred that he would have loved him, cared for him, been everything he could have to the boy, " You're my son...this is incredible.. I...you're a man fully grown, I never knew." he said though he was fairly certain Jarred knew that Edward didn't know. Even though Jarred said he didn't blame Edward for any of this, Edward still felt immensely guilty.

Jarred almost laughed when Edward commented that he was a full grown man now. He still felt like a kid most days, though Evie did make him mature pretty quickly.
He scratched the back of his neck. "Yeah, well, if you think that's something..."
He looked up, almost apologetically. "You've got a granddaughter too." He might as well get it all out in the open.

Edward just blinked at the news, " A granddaughter...?" he whispered reverently then looked around as if she would just materialize or as if Jarred had her in a pocket. He wasn't fully on his game the shock had temporarily stunted his thinking capacity. "H-how...old?" he asked, he was trembling. What did you do when you just found out that you had a son?
In the muggle world without the use of magic Edward might have waited for more proof, allowing himself to ease into the idea, but no he knew without a doubt that Jarred Donnelly was his son and he felt so...amazed.

"She's almost a year," Jarred replied, and sensed that Edward was looking for her. "I didn't bring her. I wasn't even actually going to mention her, but... I felt like I should. My sister is watching her."
It was a lot easier to talk about Evie than it was to talk about himself, and it put him a little more at ease here.

"Sister...?" he said raising a brow, there was no way Jarred's sister...er the one from Ireland could be his own but at the moment Edward's grip on reality wasn't doing so well then, "Sister..." he said in a more subdued tone, "Samantha..." he blinked and looked up at Jarred, "You just...I mean, she was just here."
Strangely Edward too felt easier talking about Samantha than dealing with what was happening to him.
