Ashton had debated with himself the entire week.
During the attack he had been concerned about her, worried that she might have been hurt or worse, but after the attack it was worse, as if a part of him were in a constant state of anxiety. He would turn the corner and someone would be there to inform him that she was dead. He couldn't even ask anyone, no one knew that they had gotten close. Gotten close? He hung out with her once or twice, that wasn't exactly close, but apparently the undercurrent was strong enough to have him excessively worried.
He did a good job masking it but Natasha could usually tell if something was bugging him so he avoided her. Then one day out of the blue there she was, walking down the hall as if nothing had happened. Allaire Burke was just as he remembered her, and she was unharmed.
At first he felt joy, then immediate disgust at himself. He wasn't attached to her, he refused to get attached to any girl, and he hadn't even dated this girl or...had other intimate encounters with her, but the truth was there for him to see, he liked her.
He sighed to himself, he often denied what he could deny himself, but if it was something he wanted, he went for it without regards to the consequences, and Allaire Burke had just become something he wanted, something he would have.
***
"We've missed you around these parts." he said over her shoulder. The common room was empty, they were alone once more only everything had changed.

Allaire happened to be at home whenever the attack on Hogsmeade occurred. Her parents decided to have a family weekend. She realized that she had actually thought about going to Hogsmeade that weekend, but it was a good thing that her parents did plan a family weekend. Although, Allaire thought that her parents had perfect timing for something like that. However, she didn't think much of it. More than likely it would have been best if she didn't think to much into it.
Naturally, during the attack, Allaire couldn't help but wonder about the other students. Did they get out? Where they stuck there? A few times, her thoughts went right to Ashton. Did he make it out alright? Ophelia had reassured her that he had, while she reassured her that Tyler was fine too. Allaire hated sitting around and waiting.
Once she returned to school, she looked around for him, but never saw him until he saw her in the hallway. Ashton seemed like he was busy or something, and she herself was in sort of a hurry to get to class, so she had only given him a smile before rushing off to class before she was late.
Allaire walked down the stairs from the girl's dorm to the common room with a book in hand. Once again, it was Jane Eyre. Tonight just seemed like one of those Mr. Rochester nights. She walked over to the couch that she usually sat on and made herself comfortable. After she finished with Jane Eyre, she was thinking of reading Bram Stoker's Dracula. That would be an interesting read.
She opened the worn out copy of Jane Eyre and started to read. Allaire was so wrapped up in her reading that she didn't hear anyone come up behind her. At the sound of his voice, Allaire looked beside her. "Hi," she said. She even blushed slightly, but it was a very light shade of pink. "I suppose I should feel special then." A smile etched its way across her face.

He opened his mouth to say something witty but took a moment and just smirked at her instead taking a seat across the way. There was a silence in the room and he glanced around, " I see you've managed to get this place to yourself...I shouldn't worry about some hex chasing after me for intruding on your solitude should I?" he asked in an almost teasing way.

She hid the smile that wanted to appear on her face. Allaire acted as if she were observing him and was in deep thought. "Well, I suppose I could be nice tonight and not send any hexes your way," she said in a teasing manner. "After all, I hadn't gotten really far, so I think you're safe." Allaire allowed the smile to spread across her face.
"How have you been?"

Ashton raised a brow at her generosity of not hexing him and smirked before coining a phrase one of his old clients used, " Been Better been worse, can't complain." he told her, he added the pleasantry of asking how she was in return.
As he waited for her answer he was seemingly scanning her head to toe to make sure she was indeed not hurt in anyway, though he had heard rumors that none of the Burkes had even been in attendance when the attack hit but he didn't know if those were just rumors or truth.

"I've been alright. I can't complain too much. Other than the weekend at home. It wasn't that great, except that I read a few new books." Allaire gave a shrug. She knew about the attack on Hogsmeade, and as Ashton was scanning her for any signs that she had been there, she was doing the same to him.
She decided to ask the question that had been nagging her ever since she first found out about the attack. "Were you in Hogsmeade?"

He nodded once and that was enough to let her know that Hogsmeade was something he didn't want to talk about, however he found himself sighing a bit with relief, " I'm glad however...that you were at home...and no where near this place." he shook his head sighing once more since he continued, " It was utter chaos...not just the attack but after...the hospital wing...all of it. Even now not all the students are...well even our house Champion was still at St. Mungos until a day or two ago, it was bad...really bad."

She could understand him not wanting to talk about it. At least he wasn't hurt in anyway that she could tell. "I can't imagine," Allaire said. She wondered who all was hurt. When Ashton said that Sam was even at St. Mungo's, she made a mental note to check on her.
The attack wasn't a good topic to talk about, so Allaire tried to think of something that she could change the subject to. Pushing her hair behind her ear and folding one leg up, she looked from her book back over to Ashton. "So, what do you plan on doing this Christmas," Allaire asked conversationally.

Christmas wasn't exactly what Ashton wanted to talk about either, he had the ideal choice of either going home and putting up with his mother's latest drunk boyfriend or staying at the school, he fully intended to stay at the school.
" Working a bit on some potions otherwise just staying in looking forward to some peace and quiet."

Allaire nodded quietly. "Well, maybe, over break you could stop by. It could be a break from school work and after all, we're friends, so I don't see where there would be anything wrong with that, that is of course if you wanted to." She realized that she was sort of fumbling for the right words to come together, so she grew quite for a moment attempting to think of something else.
"I have a new book if you ever want to borrow it, and haven't read it. It's Dracula. Seems like its going to be pretty good."

He gave her a trademark side smile that she might have been able to recognize the more time they spent together, " It's a very good novel." he said waving over the fact that he had already read the book, he wouldn't mind borrowing it from her however just to spend more time with her. He smiled at the other invitation but wasn't going to bring it back up. He wondered at that invitation as well but it as something he would have to ponder further.

"In about two days, if that long, I'll be done with it and I can let you borrow it. I was planning on starting it tomorrow." A light smile was on her face. The smile he had given her did not go unnoticed, and she decided that she liked it whenever he smiled like that.
The fact that he didn't really comment on her invitation made her wonder what exactly he was thinking. It could be a good thing, after all he didn't say no, but Allaire wasn't going to get her hopes up for nothing. It wasn't that she never expected him to, it was just that she didn't want to expect something that had the chance of not happening.

It was simply his fear of being rejected. Her family was one of the bigger and better, and while he was pure blood, he was from a middle class family. Not that his own personal aspirations were to remain there he already ran his own enterprise catering to the rich and pompous at the school that allowed him to live like a rich and pompous man himself, only he never spent any of the money he earned foolishly, most of it was still saved in a bank account. One day he'd be able to make a name for himself, and one day he might have been worthy of taking out an esteemed Burke, but that day was not today.
"You'll have to let me know how you liked it."

A gentle smile was placed on her face. She thought of what Ophelia told her, but Allaire pushed those thoughts out of her head. Although, Allaire was half tempted to ask him why did it seem like he avoided her from time to time. She wondered if she had done something wrong or something along those lines, but again, she pushed those thoughts from her mind as well.
"I was planning on telling you anyway, whether you liked it or not," she said her smile turning into a teasing one.

He was definitely sending mixed signals, which wasn't usually his style, but the fact was he was so mixed up himself he couldn't really help it.
He smiled at her cheeky way of telling him that she would do what she wanted to do and nodded in approval, "Very well then I shall endure it." he teased right along with her, he shifted in his seat as other students came in and decided to move to a seat that was closer to her, the other students went up to their respective rooms but he didn't move away. "How was your vacation?"

She didn't make a comment abut other students coming in, even though they were going up to their rooms. Her attention didn't shift to them. "It was alright. I read, got a few new books, and Ophelia made me go through so many dresses." At the last part, Allaire sighed while rolling her eyes. Going through all the dresses that Ophelia had at home was tiring to say the least. "But over all, it was alright. Got to have a lot of sister time, so that was good. Other than that, nothing to interesting. Guess I'm not that much of an interesting person." She gave him a smile and a gentle shrug.

"That's impossible" he said with a little grin, " I think you're ...enchanting." he said pausing for the right word. She was interesting, to him at least, for a Slytherin he sensed a certain innocence in her and he was hesitant to taint what innocence she had, perhaps that made him less of a Slytherin as well, still the fact that he wasn't going to hold himself back anymore either probably put him back in the Slytherin category.

She was, enchanting? Allaire's cheeks turned pink, and she didn't bothering hiding that her cheeks turned. She did, however, cast her eyes away for a moment, hiding the fact that she wanted to smile. On the inside, Allaire was bouncing with excitement, but she kept a calm appearance.
"Thank you," she said almost shyly. Allaire brought her eyes back up to his, and set a light trace of a smile on her face. "That is probably one of the nicest compliments I've gotten." She never got too many compliments, but even the ones she did get, she didn't let go to her head.

Ashton found it difficult to believe that one of the Burke princesses hadn't been showered with compliments, he knew that Fee certainly had her fair share of them, and Kassia could always be recommended for her serenity and reserved nature, that poise that rang true of the elegance the elite were supposed to inspire, but Allaire... She was something else entirely. Confident, quiet, self assured and never aspiring to be anything but who she was and what she could be at her best. She didn't seem to fear the disapproval of others, though many in her position might have. She had it all beauty, brains, prestige and yet a kindness that was sorely lacking in their house, enchanting? She was like a breath of fresh air.
"You deserve to be complimented every day and by someone who could do your person more justice than my mere self."

Allaire blushed a deeper shade of red. "Compliments are just words that help a person's self-esteem build, I am just fine the way I am, but I do appreicate your words." A light smile appeared on her face. She didn't need a lot of compliments to continue going on. Compliments were not given to her often, really because she was always off somewhere with a book. She tended to pull away from everyone else and have time to herself, however there were times when she liked to be around people.
