Rayne wasn't really paying attention to the people around her, and his appearance seemed sudden. Unexpected.
Had she noticed him standing there and searching for something to say, she probably would have made some sarcastic remark about taking a wizard photograph. She didn't, however, and her eyebrows went up as she raised her eyes to meet his. Oddly, she looked over her shoulder at the ice sculpture- one of four around the room. This one happened to be a Raven perched on a stack of books. It didn't look in danger of melting, anyway, and the rest of his words really only registered as she turned back to look at him.
Her lips parted, but not quite enough to look like she was about to speak, because really, what did she say to that? "I'm sure the freezing charms on it are strong enough to withstand my hair. You are...?"
Bryce. She knew the answer to the question, but that was Rayne's way of keeping him at a distance, not quite inviting his presence just yet.

Bryce's smile didn't slip, even though his stomach was churning uneasily. The fact that she hadn't called him out for making what could only be described as a cheesy pickup line encouraged him, even though her feigned ignorance of his name was a bit disheartening. Of course she knew his name, he knew that. But he could play along.
"Bryce," he said, extending his hand to her. "And you're Rayne. You used to sit next to me in Charms class."

"Right," Rayne said, looking at his hand for just a split second before she stood up and took it. It felt rude to stay seated, but she returned to her seat quickly enough. To be honest, she was sort of impressed that he remembered her name since they never talked more than in passing.
"You can sit, if you like," she offered, unsure what else to say to him. She didn't really have the patience to babble about Charms or where they sat now. She ran a hand through her fiery red hair and looked up at him.

Lola had spent hours getting ready for the ball. She may not have had a date, but she intended to dance with every single guy tonight. It was a dance, for God's sake. She loved the very thought of it, from the dress to the theme to the single guys she would search out. It was like the whole event was planned with her in mind. Sure, it may have been in honor of the house champions, but it didn't matter. The point was that fun was to be had!
She changed her hair to a honey blonde for the night, thinking it would accent the red dress she was wearing rather well. It had little gold flowers embroidered around the hem and the neck line. She didn't try to be patriotic to Gryffindor house, it just sort of happened.
Stepping into a cute pair of heels, she hurried down to the ballroom, slightly dismayed at the near empty dance floor. Turning her eyes on the tables, she spotted a familiar face; a girl a year below her. They'd studied together a few times, and she could at least count Rayne as an acquaintance. And it beat standing around looking lonely, didn't it?
"Rayne! You look gorgeous," she complimented, not worried if she was interrupting anything. Her eyes turned to Bryce, a boy in her year, and her head tilted just slightly. "Well, don't you clean up well? Are you two here together?"

Bryce had accepted Rayne's offer to sit, and was about to attempt to make some sort of conversation when Lola arrived and saved him the trouble. "No, we didn't come here together," he replied. "Due to what can only be described as a terrible travesty, Rayne here was sitting alone, and since I was about to do the same, I thought maybe we could be alone together. But, hey, I'm sure Rayne wouldn't mind if you joined us. The more the merrier, right? We can be the table of people too cool to worry about having a date."

Rayne had to refrain from rolling her eyes. Physically refrain from it, at that, and she blinked a couple of times to hide it. Now that Lola was here (even her name demanded attention), she may as well stay quiet. The girl had a way of stealing the limelight from anyone, and guys flocked to her.
Though, it wasn't like she was trying very hard to maintain a conversation with Bryce when the other girl arrived anyway. In fact, she hadn't known what to say at all, and now she was torn between pointing out that she had, at one point, had a date, or smiling and telling Bryce that he was on to something.
"The more the merrier," she confirmed, and she couldn't deny liking Lola. She was a sweet, bubbly girl, even if she was hard to compete with. She wasn't unlike Rayne in her habit of saying whatever came to mind, either.
Her eyes strayed back to Bryce, as if trying to figure out if he was flirting with her. She doubted it... he probably just always sounded like he was flirting. "Besides being too cool, why don't you have a date?" she asked him. "No one worth asking?"

Bryce liked Lola, too, although she was just a little too perky for his taste. However, he certainly planned on asking both girls to dance at least once before the night was out. It looked like they were still awaiting the entrance of the four champions and their dates, because the dance floor was empty and the music hadn't really started, either.
Turning his attention back to Rayne, he shrugged. "I did ask someone and she turned me down. I was so deeply wounded that I just couldn't bring myself to ask another girl."
For dramatic effect, he put his hand over his heart and assumed a pained expression.

"Oh, Ace is quite sure of herself tonight," he responded back teasingly. Tyler was sure that she was going to be the belle of the ball. She was Ophelia after all. Part of him wondered what a princess like her was doing with a nobody like him but he dared never to ask that question aloud. He was afraid that if he did, everything would just go up in a puff of smoke and he would wake up from his dreaming. "It'll start soon. Then after it starts, I'm going to make sure you dance the night away," Tyler grinned again, "With me of course." "Well if you ask me, you're the one who thinks highly of himself," Ophelia said in a playful tone. "Whatever makes you think I'm going to spend the whole night dancing with just you? After all, it's a big school, and there are lots of boys... you wouldn't want to deny them the privilege of dancing with me, now would you? What if I wanted to dance with someone else?" Actually, she wasn't planning to dance with anyone else, except perhaps her brother. But she liked joking around with Tyler; it felt natural to tease him and pretend that she wasn't interested.

“The fact that I don’t want to share you makes me think that I’m going to be dancing with you all night, except when your brother wants to step in. I can’t deny him a dance with his precious sister.” He let out a laugh. “Besides, after you see my dancing skills, I feel sure you won’t want to dance with anyone else. On top of that, you like me Ophelia Burke.” A smile fell across his face. It was the first time he actually used her name.
“There’s going to be that chance of a kiss at midnight, and I don’t know if you really want to be dancing with someone else, would you?” Tyler looked at her teasingly. He was serious about the first part, however. “Plus, there could be more chances than at midnight and if you’re off with someone else, that chance will just slip right by.”

Roxanna was surprized at the thought that she might be early for the dance; she was never early for anything. She looked around at everyone else standing outside. "Uhm, I think it's safe to say we wait here," She said, looking to Nick and smiling, "I think they might call everyone in when it's starting." "Oh, yea, that makes sence," Nick chuckled. They stood together patiently, chatting lightly and watching the room fill up. "Were you planning on meeting up with anyone here?" nick remembered. he wasn't, but his sister had mentioned that Roxanna may want to hang out with her friends as well that evening, and he had forgotton to ask until now.

Justin, of course, was only going for her sake. They couldn't have a Scotts not attending the Yule Ball, and Thatcher wouldn't have reacted well if Gwen went with someone inappropriate. This way, he could keep an eye on her and see if there were any young men who displayed an interest in her. Although of course it didn't take nearly as long for him to get ready as it took Gwen, he was still meticulous in his preparations. He was impeccibly dressed in black robes with a bit of red satin trim to match Gwen's house colors and a pair of shiny black leather shoes. Once he was ready, he apparated as close to the school as possible and then walked the rest of the way. He opened the doors to the Great Hall only a few moments after Gwen arrived to wait for him. "There you are," he greeted her with a smile. "You look beautiful." Gwen didn't have to wait long for her brother to find her, and when her eyes landed on him, she smiled. She had been so serious and withdrawn the last few days, Adrien ever on her mind. She hated it, and hadn't really been herself. So that smile may well have been her first one for some time. She approached him and threw her arms around him. "You look really nice, Justin," she told him. "I'm really glad you could come tonight. You know you didn't have to." She even felt distanced from Justin. Some days, she wouldn't even talk to Tim or Thane. The only one of her siblings that she wouldn't turn away was Xavier. But tonight, she refused to think about Adrien at all, or her future, or any of it. Tonight, she was just a girl in a pretty dress with her brother by her side.

Alyx was still hiding in the shadows, she was more than nervous to enter that room. Although Sam and Christine had done wonders...more than wonders, they completely transformed her into a lady, into a princess really. She took a deep breath and peered around the corner. The mask on her face concealed more than her identity, she felt as if it hid who she really was inside as well. The air of mystery, even the act of doing such a thing added a sense of mischief, and she felt different than who she was. Tonight she wasn't a ragtag hoyden, she was an unknown, a beautiful unknown at that, a royal one. Jonesy noticed one girl enter the hall and then stood up straight. She wore a mask, but he was sure he had never met the girl before. He watched her for a moment; in all her grace, he was surprised that she stood away from the crowds of people. He decided to introduce himself; it wasn't like he was doing anything exciting anyway, just watching, looking maybe to see if his buddy Roman was around. So he walked over to where she was and smiled, making a little graceful bow. "Hi," Jonesy said. "I don't think we've met, I'm Jonesy Duggan." he said politely, smiling and stepping closer, but not invading her space.

For dramatic effect, he put his hand over his heart and assumed a pained expression. Lola laughed at the dramatic show. "Well, whoever turned you down was obviously out of her mind. I would have never said no to you." The truth was, for all the guys that usually surrounded Lola, no one had asked her at all. Maybe they all assumed she already had a date, or they were too afraid she would say no. She wasn't disheartened. It just meant she was free to dance with whoever she wanted, and she really kind of liked that. "Where's Evelyn?" Lola asked Rayne, since the two girls were practically attached at the hip.

Rayne frowned at Bryce. "That's horrible," she said. Honestly, it was cruel to turn a guy down if he worked up the courage to ask a girl. "I'm sorry." Maybe it hit awfully close to home with her and Nate... everyone goes away in the end.
Her attention was, once again, drawn away by Lola, who it seemed was already flirting with Bryce. She wondered who would be the first to ask the other to dance.
"Oh, Eves is here with Rabastan Lestrange. I believe she's already with him." And she would get to hear all about it later. She hoped Rabastan at least made her happy for the night, if nothing else. Glancing at Bryce, she quickly explained, "Evelyn is my best friend. She's in Gryffindor."

God, that girl could bring a grown man to his knees, Cameron thought as she looked over her shoulder at him. He had a thing for girls who knew what they had and used it, and for some reason he couldn't explain, a little tug to the tie would always turn him on. "You keep this up, Brenda, and we're not even going to make an appearance at this dance," he said, taking a couple of quick steps to catch up to her and put his arm around her waist, walking with her up to the staircase. Well, she did want to make an appearance, but she didn't care if it was a long one. It wasn't for the spectacle of the ball, or the dancing, or any of that. Really, she just wanted to create a scandal in her too-short halter dress. Every other girl was dressed head to toe in taffeta and tulle, but Brenda wouldn't be caught dead looking like Fairy Princess Barbie. No, she wanted to stand out, and dressed as she was, that was pretty much guaranteed to happen. She knew the guys would gawk and the girls would start gossiping. At least, she hoped they would. "We don't have to stay long," she purred. "But I do so enjoy getting you all revved up." For a fling, they were perfect for each other. Brenda probably encouraged his fear of intimacy, which he wasn't even 100% sure he had. He just didn't see why he should settle into a long term relationship when he was still just 17. "Hold on," he said, pausing and shaking his head. "Wait right here." Being quick, he ran upstairs and discarded his robes and very quickly changed into a pair of muggle slacks, a button down shirt, and suspenders. He looked sharp, but at least he would blend in just a bit more with Brenda's unconventional look. Rushing back down the stairs, he smiled at her and put his hand on her back and walked next to her as they made their way down to the ballroom. If she was going to cause a scandal, he wanted to be there when it happened. He wanted to be a part of it, even. While they climbed the stairs to the first floor, Cameron got glimpses of the other students all dressed up, and he caught himself wondering what Savannah would look like all dolled up.

"Hey, Jules," Jeremy said, smiling. He stood up and went over to kiss her hand. "You look gorgeous. But I think this is my cue... I'd better go pick up Alenna. She'll kill me if I leave her standing around waiting for me. I'll see you guys down there later, OK?" He straightened his dress robes one last time, then he was out the door and on the way to the Ravenclaw common room. His knees were knocking the whole time, but he tried not to let it show. "Good luck," Julia waved as Jeremy sped off to pick up Alenna. "They're cute aren't they?" she asked, leaning against the doorframe. "It's not like we're short on time, i'm not rushing you if you're not ready," Julia told Nolan. Nolan smirked. "Yeah, they're cute." And Jeremy was going to hear all about it later. Nolan wouldn't let him go to sleep tonight without hearing a few well chosen jabs about just how cute he and Alenna were. He waved his hand towards Julia. "I'm always ready for anything," he said, giving her a smile. "Are you ready, milady?" he asked with a flair, holding his arm out for her to take.

Alenna blushed. She never really saw herself as a gorgeous girl, but with Jeremy around, she felt more beautiful than ever. "And I'll be the luckiest girl," Alenna replied. She took Jeremy's hand and the two headed toward the ball. "How are Nolan and Julia? She rush you two out the door?" Alenna laughed. Jeremy laughed. "No, not really," he said. "She was unusually calm for a change. I was just anxious to see you. And you really are worth the wait. I'm really glad we decided not to go with the covered in mud idea.... although I still think you looked beautiful covered in mud." He held out his hand to her and gave a grandiose bow. "My lady, I would be glad to escort you to the ball," he teased. "Shall we?"

Well of course that occured to her, people generally didn't know who she was, however she assumed that people she had interacted with in the past would know indeed that it was her underneath the mask and the dress. Apparently it wasn't so. Then again how could someone like Alyx afford such a dress, or the pins in her hair, or any of it really. Alyx didn't look like this. She had never been this neat or put together in her entire life. She wasn't lil ol Alyx anymore, she was indeed Alyxandria, which was a name fit for a queen. Tonight she decided she would play the part, if Jonesy didn't know her, then she wasn't giving anything away. "My pleasure." she said softly, her voice even different than usual, no slow drawl, she was a lady tonight in every sense of the word.

Thane rushed down to the ground floor. Leo had left him in his shoeless state a while ago, and Thane was almost frantic now. Had the champions already gone in? Was Regina forced to walk in alone because he was too absent minded?
He nearly collided with a couple as he rounded the corner towards the staircase, and he called out an apology over his shoulder.
And then... there she was. She was alone outside the ballroom, and obviously waiting for someone... him. He felt terrible, and by the time he presented himself in front of her, he was a little out of breath, both from the run and how stunning she looked. "Regina," he said. "I'm so sorry. Am I too late? I couldn't find my shoes, anywhere, and you look amazing."

She looked... stunning, and for the first time in his life, Justin felt lightheaded. Their kiss during the attack had been steamy, and, although he'd forced it out of his mind, seeing her again brought it hurtling back to him with enough force to bring him to his knees. "Miss Davenport, is it?" he said, unable to help himself. "You look lovely this evening."
