Marlene folded her arms over her chest. "Hestia, please. I've already made up my mind. I'm not going. I don't even think I would go if Kingsley walked through that door right this minute and told me he was ready to take me. What's the point? Just to get all dressed up for a few hours in a dress that I'll never wear again?"
She gave another wistful glance at the dress and sighed. "But I'll tell you what. Why don't you go? You can wear the dress... we're almost the same size."

Gwen actually felt kind of lonely getting ready for the Yule Ball, and maybe that was her own fault. She just didn't feel close enough to the other girls to be giddy about it, and she took her time doing her hair and make up. She wasn't sad about the night or anything, she just felt sort of blase about the dance part of it.
The only reason she was even going was because Justin was coming, and she didn't get to see him nearly enough. She adored her brother, and would do anything for him. In fact, if he asked her to lie down and willingly marry Adrien, she would have. Luckily, that conversation had not yet come up.
When she was dressed and ready, looking like the Pureblood daughter she really was, she went down to the grand staircase, alone, and waited for Justin. She was excited to see him, and her eyes were practically glued to the doors, waiting for him to come inside.

Justin, of course, was only going for her sake. They couldn't have a Scotts not attending the Yule Ball, and Thatcher wouldn't have reacted well if Gwen went with someone inappropriate. This way, he could keep an eye on her and see if there were any young men who displayed an interest in her.
Although of course it didn't take nearly as long for him to get ready as it took Gwen, he was still meticulous in his preparations. He was impeccibly dressed in black robes with a bit of red satin trim to match Gwen's house colors and a pair of shiny black leather shoes.
Once he was ready, he apparated as close to the school as possible and then walked the rest of the way. He opened the doors to the Great Hall only a few moments after Gwen arrived to wait for him.
"There you are," he greeted her with a smile. "You look beautiful."

Natasha's brow raised at her reflection. Her violet eyes were clearly defined and enhanced by dark perfectly arched brows, everything against a porcelain white canvas made for a striking appearance overall, and that was simply her face. Her gown was startling in a similar way, violet silk was accented through black lace backdropped against her the pearl luminesence of her skin. The dress fell across her shoulders and a bodice beneath enhanced her already relatively perfect physical features.
The dress was absolutely backless save a single cross strap that held up the gown. With her hair half swept up half cascading in curls showcased a black choker with a black diamond dangling in front of her throat. She glowed, she stole one's breath, and she wondered why she felt so empty inside. Turning from her reflection her skirts rustled and flowed, swaying with her she retrieved her reticule from the bed then proceeded to walk down to the ball. She and Devon were technically supposed to go together but she told him to meet her at the ball instead. She didn't really want to be announced with him.
Her heels gently tapped on the stone floor then she paused at the entrance to the ball taking a long glance around.

Jonesy purposly planned to not have a date to the Yule Ball that evening. Haveing a date oblidged him to only dane with and see only her. But to Jonsey, this was a party. And parties are where he would mingle, meet girls, flirt, and try not to get pummled by other girls' boyfriends.
He had opted away from the tie that supposedly went with his dress robes, a deep red shirt and black slacks under a black robe. He smiled at his reflection in the mirror, happy with his apperence before leaving the room to head toward the ball. By the time he reached the entrance hall, Jonesy thought he'd just observe for a while, at least until someone came and talked to him anyway. He leaned against the door that went to the great hall and looked around for familiar faces.

Natalie's cheeks felt warm, and she cast her eyes down at the floor shyly. It probably would have surprised some people that Severus would be capable of such sweetness, but Natalie wasn't surprised. She knew better than most people. And she couldn't deny that he made her blush more often than anyone else did. "Thank you," she said as they found a seat under a simulated tree coated in sparkling crystals of ice. "I think they must have used a cooling spell in here. It's actually cold." Severus sat down under the tree and felt a shiver climb up his back. He sat up straighter but noticed the blush that had risen on Natalie's cheeks. He smiled at her; sitting next to her made him forget the chill that recently raced upon his skin. "It's not too bad after a moment." He reached over to take hold of one of Natalie's Hands and felt another shiver that had little to do with a cooling spell raise goosebumps along his lanky arm. He wondered if he should do something romantic, he wasn't looking forward to dancing. He hadn't thought of dancing at a good strategy, he was seriously reconsidering social grace as perhaps a good means of gaining an upper hand on a situation, but then that was more of Malfoy's area of expertise. He thought a moment and realized he didn't have to get an upper hand here, he was with Natalie and that made me feel very good. "So what's next? Or do I just sit here and watch you look pretty?" he asked in a dead pan seriousness which made his statement sound almost like joke. It was actually fine with Natalie if Severus didn't want to dance. She liked dancing, but in her own way. It was more like a free-form dance, not focusing on rhythm so much as the flow of the music. She only danced for herself, when no one was looking, because to her, it was intensely personal. When she was dancing, that was one of the only times she really felt free. To her, it didn't make sense to dance with another person. Then you had to match your style and movements to another person. You couldn't be free... you were dependent on the other person. Blushing at his compliment, she laughed slightly. "Er... I honestly don't know. I suppose this is pretty much it." Severus scowled, dances and balls were boring, at least in his current perspective. "We should at least dance once together." he said with conviction that even surprised him. Dancing looked like something liberating, the way some of the students danced at least. They looked so happy to be together. In speaking his desire to dance was to nearly declare how much he wanted to show he was happy with Natalie. She was his best friend, at least for now his affection was that simple and easily explained. Severus's eyes drifted for a split second around the ballroom and saw Black dancing with some girl he didn't know, Black's ex-girl friend obviously pouting and ready to whine, and a few other dancing couples. It wasn't really time to dance, but Severus didn't want to give Black the impression he was going to follow his lead and take Natalie out to dance yet. "But first, would you care for some of the foggy juice they have?" he pointed to a large crystal Punch bowl with a silver ladle that held a purple drink in it that smoked and bubbled with more wispy curls of smoke when it was ladled into the crystal cups that hung on the side of the punch bowl.

Gage saw Lily step out of her common room and smiled, blushing a little when he saw how beautiful she looked that evening. He qickly walked over to her and grinned wider. "Lily, you look great," he said, hoping that he'd stop blushing soon. Lily's cheeks flushed as bright red as her hair. "Thank you," she said. "You look really good, too." She bit down on her lower lip, tasting just a hint of the strawberry flavored lip gloss she had chosen to wear. A sudden, unwelcome thought flitted through her mind and she found herself, very briefly, wondering what James would think when he saw her. He had a date, of course, so maybe he wouldn't notice her at all. Still... Taking a deep breath, she pushed these thoughts from her mind and took Gage's arm. "I guess we should head down there," she said.

Ethan spent a little more time getting ready than he normally would have. He was excited, if he would allow himself to admit it. He was anxious to see Lyra dressed up, and to spend the evening with her, though he told her he would have to meet her in the ballroom. He promised Lyla that he would see her before they both got caught up in the evening.
He made his way down the grand staircase, keeping his eyes open for both his sister and Lyra. He already knew he was going to get really protective when he saw how pretty his sister was. He wished he could keep her young and sweet and innocent forever, but he already saw her innocence being torn away slowly.
The ball room was filling up a bit slower than he thought it would, but that made it easier to look for the girls.

After Vic arrived she stuck close by his side, introducing him to a few people she interacted with daily including the professors and whatnot. She was very proud of her relationship with Vic and like a little girl was want to do, she showed him off. Soon without meaning to however she collilded into her brother. She turned to apologize but the words fell away and she simply looked up with wide smiling eyes, "Ethan!"

"Right under my nose," Ethan said, beaming when he saw his sister. As predicted, she looked utterly beautiful. It meant, of course, that he would murder any boy that looked at her. It was at this thought that he looked up at the boy she'd been talking to, only to discover his friend.
"Vic," he said in greeting as he pulled Lyla into his arms. "I didn't expect you here."
He pulled away from his baby sister, holding her at arm's length. "You look very pretty, love."

Beaming at him she nodded, "Look who came to visit." she said indicating Vic by her side, "My two favorite people in the whole world are here tonight, I'm so lucky." she said smiling like neither one of them had seen her smile in a long time.
She easily melted into her brother's arms and blushed at his praise. She was still a little young for her to notice other boys and their stares, but other boys were not too young to notice her and that made a world of difference, had she known that she attracted even one guy that night she would have been very greatful indeed for her brother's and her friend's company.

Hestia grabbed a brush and a bottle of muggle hairspray and tugged at the curlers in Marlene's hair.

"OK, OK. I'll go. But I hope you know I have every intention of having a completely miserable time. I'll probably sit alone at a table, sipping punch, and I'll slip out early." She knew that wasn't at all the attitude she should be taking, but she was angry, and she couldn't see herself having a good time at the ball. "Go ahead, do your worst," she said, surrendering to Hestia's attempts to fix her hair.

Vic stepped back as they ran into Ethan. He smiled at the hug the two shared. Sometimes, when they were all younger, he'd wish that he'd have siblings, that way Vic would have someone to be that close with like Lilac and Ethan did. "Hey Ethan," Vic said when he was addressed. "Good to see you," he smiled. He had begun to make friends with his co-workers, but Vic knew he missed Ethan and Lyla, the two people he'd grown up with.
"Hey, you happened to mention that Lyla didn't have a date, and I couldn't let that be, could I?" Vic winked at the two. "Anyway, this way you have two pairs of eyes watching out for her tonight." He laughed, smiling at the pair.

"Guess we should," Gage agreed. They walked to the entrance hall and saw groups of people talking excitedly. Gage leaned over to whisper to Lily. "Now what do we do?" he asked, smiling a little.

Lilac wrinkled her nose that her brother had confessed to Vic that she didn't have a date. It wasn't for lack of offers, she simply didn't care for anyone in particular to go with, and she believed that encouraging a date by attending the ball with her would have seemed too forward or promising and she simply didn't want to go through that sort of unpleasantness. This however she could not tell her brother or he would be even more protective than usual, not that she really cared when it meant more time with him, but she didn't want to give him more to worry about.
"I am perfectly capable of watching after myself thank you." she said with her chin up a small taste of the woman she would be was shining through her eyes, yet she ruined the image by darting her tongue out and making a face at Vic and her brother for their assumption that she needed to be watched.

Hestia rolled her eyes. "You know, you're going to have a miserable time if you keep thinking this way and don't be mad at me because you're stubborn." She planted a small kiss on Marlene's cheek and started on her hair again.
"Now, how do you want your hair? I already know that I want to do your make-up in neutral tones, maybe a light white for your eyeshadow, but I think that's it." Hestia smiled. She was extremely happy that she had won her battle.

Marlene sighed. She really wanted to get into her pajamas and bury herself under her covers with a good book. What was the point in going to the ball, anyway? She was being stood up, and it made her feel stupid. She had all but convinced herself that she was in love with Kingsley, and since the attack, he'd been different. He didn't even seem to want to see her anymore, and it hurt more than she was prepared to admit.
"I don't know, I guess just leave it down and curly. It's too short to pull up into one of those fancy hairstyles."

Rayne and Evelyn had parted ways after they were finished getting ready. Eves had to go meet Rabastan, and it still made Rayne angry. She would throw a fit at that Slytherin boy if he made Evelyn cry... and Rayne had a terrible feeling that he would. It wasn't fair, and she only wished she would have the sense when the time came not to say, 'I told you so.'
Nate had disappeared... rumor had it, his grandmother called him away indefinitely. Maybe he transferred schools... whatever the reason, Rayne was used to empty promises, and she was certainly used to people leaving. Tonight, she refused to think about him much. She would have a good time, even if everyone she knew was there with a date. At least, everyone in the dorms while she was getting dressed. To a young girl, that may as well have been everyone.
She made her way into the Ballroom quickly, sort of hoping for a subtle appearance so that she could suss out the situation before she really decided if she should skip the dance or not. She was still tempted to go back to the dorms for the night.
Getting herself a goblet of pumpkin juice, she found and empty table and sat down, her eyes on the dance floor, which was remarkably empty.

Bryce was a little embarrassed that he had to go to the ball alone. It wasn't that he couldn't get a date. Well, OK, it was. He had taken too long to get up the nerve to ask anyone, and when he did, the girl he asked told him that she already had a date. After that, he just assumed he was the only loser without a date, and didn't bother trying to ask anyone else.
Still, the fact that he was single and dateless didn't stop him from going to the ball anyway. At the very least, he could dance and have some punch and just have fun. That was what this was supposed to be about, right?
He dressed in his finest dress robes, which were crisply tailored and all black, with a touch of darker black satin along the collar. He wore his hair slicked back, and diamond cufflinks glittered on his wrists. Given a choice, he would have preferred to wear muggle clothes, but since that was not an option, he went all out with his wizard attire.
Walking into the Great Hall, he paused to look around. The dance floor was still empty, but the house champions didn't appear to have arrived yet. So he walked over to get some juice, then looked around for an empty table.
That was when he saw her. A flash of red hair, a lonely figure sitting by herself, staring wistfully at the dance floor. His lip quirked up in the corner as he moved toward her, almost as if magnetically drawn to her.
But when he opened his mouth, nothing came out for a moment. He almost lost his nerve and walked away, but instead, he blurted out, "You shouldn't sit so close to the ice sculpture. The fire of your hair might just melt it."
