Christopher waited patiently as Andrew to his time to think about it. He wasn't going to rush him into anything he didn't want to do. He could keep Andrew under his wing and help him out wherever he needed it.
"Your other duties? I'm sure that the crew wouldn't mind spliting those up. After all, Christine was teaching to read, was she not? Since she is going to be going off to school, I can help you. I wouldn't have a problem with it, as long as you wouldn't mind me doing so."

Andrea smiled a bit, "Oh no. Won't be ness'airy capt'n" she assured him, "Thanks." she paused to think some more, but for all she was worth she couldn't think of a single reason she couldn't be his cabinboy, other than the obvious...but he didn't know that.
"Yessir, I'll be your cabinboy." she said finally.

A smile appeared on Christopher's face. "If you need anything at all, don't be afraid to ask." He studied Andrew for a moment. He was awfully small for a boy, but Christopher didn't think twice about it.
"Great. You can start today if you wish. Also, you have your choice of quarters. You can either stay with the crew, or you can have the room that Daniel had, which is next to mine. It doesn't matter where you pick." Christopher had tried his best to make sure that his crew didn't have horrible sleeping places. After all, he wanted them well rested and ready to go to keep the ship in order.
"And thank you Andrew. You're a huge help. I'm sure that Christine will be excited to hear that you have accepted."

"Yessir." she said a bit numb. He started talking about sleeping quarters and her eyes darted around the room. She thanked the heavens she wouldn't have to share the room with him as some Cabinboys did. Some lofty captains enjoyed their cabin boy...which was another name for personal slave... to be nearby to assist them in ridiculous ways. Of course she should have known that Captain Montgomery wasn't the lofty sort. Relieved she nodded already seeing that she would take Daniel's room. That'd be even better, since she'd have her own privacy away from the crew.
"Gor, don't start thankin me yet Capt'n. Don't know if I kin even do er job yet." she said in a lower voice.

"Nonsense," he said with a wave of his hand. "You will be able to do the job. You're able to fix sails and swing around like a monkey. I promise not to have you do anything crazy. I want you to be comfortable in what you do. If you would like, I can teach you to read charts and the like. Of course, if you want to do a few of your old duties, I won't stop you from doing so."
Christopher still smiled at Andrew. "I know that you will do just fine Andrew. After all, I did hire you six years ago when you were a little bit smaller than what you are now. I don't think there's anything that you can't do."

Andrea swallowed at what she considered high praise from the Captain. She didn't know that he even knew she was alive, not to mention that he thought she did well. He never complimented her before. Still his words made her feel better about herself and the huge lie she was still perpetuating. She ought to stop while ahead she thought, "Yessir."
Andrea spoke perfect English, she also knew French and Spanish, she could read in all three languages and her father had taught her how to sail when she was younger. Oh she might not be able to do the regular work a sailor did, but she could sail the ship sure enough reading charts and steering the ship in the right direction, but it was best to feign ignorance, in most cases you weren't bothered if you didn't know anything.
"Uh...no sir. I won't be turnin back. I'd be happy wi' new duties."

"Great," he replied. "But like I said if you ever feel the want or need to do something else, just do it as long as you are finished with your other duties. I promise not to give you too much." Christopher studied Andrew again. The more he studied Andrew, the more he thought about how he seemed different. It wasn't in a bad way, but Chris couldn't put his finger on it.
"You'll do just perfectly. Tell me Andrew, have you ever read a map before? You don't have to tell me you haven't if you had just to make me feel like I'm teaching something to you."

Andrea's palms had started to sweat, she didn't want to answer his questions, "Only a lil s'perience Capt'n." she told him, then shrugged holding her boyish pose, she needed to get out of there he was scrutinizing her far too much for her own liking. It wasn't like he'd be able to tell unless of course he took off her clothes but she'd rather not take the chance.
"Well sir..I'd better gets to my duties."

Christopher nodded. "Good. You can help me sometime then." He noticed that Andrew seemed to be just a little uncomfortable. He didn't want him to be uncomfortable around him. Maybe it would just take time to become more comfortable being around him a lot more. Christopher didn't question it.
"If you wish Andrew," he said with a nod. "I'm not going to stop you from doing something you want to do."

Her? Help him? He was a master at the charts. In fact her father probably would have liked Christopher a lot, would have liked his rugged charm, the way he could handle a boat, the way he got down with the crew if there was trouble. Chris was an excellent captain. She almost smiled to herself if her father had been alive today no doubt the man would try to snare Chris as a possible husband for her. That might have been the life...she thought wistfully, then cruelly landed back to reality. She wasn't a highborn lady anymore...she was a sailor, a cabin boy.
"Yessir.." she said suddenly dejected as she turned to walk out of the room.

Chris watched as Andrew left his quarters. He hoped that he would be comfortable working along side him. After all, Chris hoped that Andrew would get used to being around him all the time rather than look nervous. He stared at the spot that Andrew had been in for another moment before turning back to his charts to make sure that his calculations were correct.
Once he was satisfied with what he had done, Christopher made an appearance on deck, just observing how his crew was getting along.
