He stopped walking when he realized she wasn't following. He paused for an entire minute before cursing and catching up to her, "Didn't anyone ever tell you that it's dangerous for young girls to walk around the city by themselves?" he bit out annoyed that he cared when obviously her caretakers didn't.

She jumped, startled when he appeared again. She had an extremely uneasy feeling in her stomach now. It was fine, maybe even coincidental before, but he had doubled back to find her this time, and maybe he was the reason it wasn't safe to walk around this late.
"I'm not 12. I am perfectly capable of taking care of myself, thank you. Painful spells, remember?"

He gave her a look, he didn't want to tail after her either, but she had crossed the ten minute threshold where now he felt responsible should anything happen to her.
" Alright, miss, I'm not twelve, and perfectly capable. give me your best shot." he said pausing in his stride.

Her heart was starting to beat wildly in her chest. Why on earth... she shook her head, but stayed mute. Why did he want her to hex him in the middle of the street? So that he had an excuse to come after her? This was ridiculous! She thought. She was Adele Graham. She wasn't scared of this guy, who didn't seem like he was really all that much older than her.

He planted his hands on his hips and pursed his mouth to the side, this wasn't exactly how he envisioned this going, but in all likelihood this girl was a student at where he was now a teacher, he *was* responsible for her. In his mind he could probably rationalize that he was responsible for the whole world, but especially this willful chit.
" It's getting late miss, don't you think perhaps you should be getting home at least instead of wandering the streets? I'm willing to escort you if you have no other companion." there, he made his intentions pointedly clear.

She laughed, making no motions to curb it. "You are not escorting me, thank you," she told him. Yes, let me show you exactly where I go to school and stay so you can stalk it and the other female students there. She was bordering on acting childish now, and Merlin knew how she hated that. She forced her shoulders down, to look more relaxed.
"I know my way, and I promise I can defend myself. Thank you, but I really have it covered."

He looked both ways and wasn't quite convinced, "Please miss." he said tightly an experienced wizard could find himself in deep trouble in the evening, let alone a student.

"I'm fine," she said, emphasizing the word. Her hand was at her side, fisted around her wand.
Was this man a Death Eater, one of the followers of the man she had been hearing so much about? Why would he be interested in her? "Please. I would feel better if you left me alone."

He should have left her, turned around and gone back to the castle. Yes, he should have left her, but Samantha's face stalled him. How stubborn his sister could be, willful to a fault she'd have hexed him already, he thought fondly, the girl had hexed him for a lot less. This girl couldn't be too much older than Samantha and the thought that some harm could befall her was similar to the dread that something could happen to Sam. He would hope that someone would be decent enough to look out for his sister, and he hoped with equal or even more force that Sam, as well as this girl would allow the help.
"Look you can trust me." he rolled his eyes at how simple he sounded. Shaking his head he began again, "I'm a teacher. My name is Caleb Renneau, I just want to make sure you get to where you're going safely."

"I don't even know you," She reminded him when he insisted she could trust him. He could have been the Minister of Magic himself and she wouldn't trust him at this point. But what choice did she have? if he was going to keep pushing...
She took a deep breath. "Just let me walk behind you a little ways." Then, as an afterthought, her brows knit together. "Aren't you a little young to be a teacher?"

"Sure thing." he said when she insisted on walking behind him, smart girl, he thought. At her second question he rolled his eyes, "I get that only way too often." he shrugged, "So where are you headed? You looked like you might be going the same direction...dare I hope you're a Hogwart's student?"
Because that would simply add to his perfect day of slight humiliation.

She stopped walking again. So he was preying on students...
He couldn't be a teacher. He was close to her age, and they wouldn't let anyone this mentally messed up around a bunch of kids.
"No, actually," she said. she wasn't going to lead him back to the school. "Can we save the conversation?"

He sighed, great she was still afraid of him, and now he'd be going out of his way, "Sure...but you'll need to tell me which way to go if you're walking behind me." he now found the notion utterly annoying.

"We'll pass right by it," She said. "Don't worry." She knew there was an apartment building somewhere on the way back to the school. She could sneak inside, let him be on his way, and make her way back to the school after. She wasn't worried if he tried to get to the school on his own. Someone would see him, and there were protection spells.

He sighed and kept walking in silence. This was for Samantha, he reminded himself. Even though she was only a step-sister, the step-siblings had adopted one another as well. Samantha positively adored her older brother, and he doted on her like no other.
Still the girl had a penchant for trouble which often worried him, he knew she wasn't always the princess she appeared to be, but she had the awful habit of biting off more than she could chew. It was a good thing she was being schooled at Beauxbatons.
Finally his thoughts gave away when he saw the apartment building he turned back, "Here?"

"Yeah," she said quickly, moving towards the front door. "Well... thank you," she said, hoping that he would just go and be on his way. She raised her eyebrows, waiting.

He turned and gave her a firm nod, but he wasn't going anywhere until she was safely inside. He had too much on his mind to think that she might be just ditching him there in order to go somewhere else. So he waited for her to produce a key and go into one of the buildings, looking for all the world as if he hadn't a care or any other place to be.

"You can go," she said, her eyebrows going a little higher. He was really starting to creep her out now. She was a few seconds away from hexing him and running. What else was she supposed to do? She took Defense Against the Dark Arts for a reason, afterall.

"No it's fine I'll wait til you're inside." he said charitably with a grin that could make the most stubborn female melt.
He had hoped that he set the girl at ease by his willingness to see to her safety, he was unaware that he was doing the opposite. Hands in his pockets he posed at ease the epitome of male presence, threatening, fascinating, imposing.

He left her with no choice.
She raised the wand she had been gripping tightly for the last several minutes. "Please go."
She probably should have just hexed him, instead of giving him the warning she had, but she wasn't thinking clearly enough for that.
